Is there a way to tell what’s in range without needing to set up first?

The hexes that you can’t see (but have already discovered) are somewhat darker than the ones in view, and you never see units on them. The “strategic” view makes visibility more obvious (hex icon in the lower right corner I think).

Rev3Games just gave Brave New World 5/5 stars.

Some balancing of new concepts needed

And as a reminder, the expansion goes live later tonight on Steam! :D

I think I’ll follow my standard Civ procedure and wait for at least one or two balancing/bug-fixing patches. The game has a lot of moving parts and it always takes a few patches (or an expansion…) before it is fully baked.

I’m glad they are trying out some new concepts (archaeology and tourism) to shake things up.

Russ Pitts at Polygon gives 8.5/10 (it’s a very positive review, they evidently use the whole range).

My god, their presentation is just so…pretty. Can I use their review as my wallpaper?

For those interested in finding out more about how the new systems and civs work (to varying degrees) there is a great stream put out by MadDjinn from CivFanatics. It’s 3 parts, I’m only on the second part right now, but it’s been informative and helpful to learn how these new concepts work for me, going in.

That’s part one, which covers briefly on the new Civs, how the Shoshane work for instance, and some early game stuff (like trade routes). Part two so far covers some late game concepts like tourism and ideologies and the like. I’m super impressed with these new systems, they seem to work really well.

I believe part 3 is more about the Scenarios, but I haven’t gotten there yet.

Rob Zacny at IGN gives 9.4/10 for “the best late-game since Civ II”.

And I just discovered that Brave New World is another idiotically region-locked product, not available in Europe until Friday morning. :(

Can’t you use one of those free VPN services to login to Steam from some other country?
I’ve done this a few times when North America release came after Europe and it’s always worked like a charm.

Meh, it’s annoying but really not that important…

Reading the reviews, all this talk about how interaction between the Civs sounds really awesome and something I’ve really been wanted, but it just makes me even more frustrated that multiplayer is in shambles. I really wish they’d enable AI diplomatic interactions in MP because, as it stands, all it can do with a player (on its own initiative) is to declare war and… well, lets just say that focusing on the warfaring capability of the Civ5 AI isn’t exactly catering to its strengths.

Brave New World is now released on Steam.

Meanwhile, I frugally amuse myself with another review: Adam Biessener at Game Informer gives 9.25/10.

And Steam’s being busted and refusing to activate it for me. Now I’ll never know if Poland can into space.

Restart Steam if you haven’t, that did the trick for me.

Freakin GreenManGaming isn’t sending out keys yet. Still says “No keys available until the game is released.”

I keep getting control definition errors (like a dozen in a row regarding UITutorial or UIStartGame) just passed the loading screen. Then I get a touch screen tutorial? I’m running Windows 7, even. Also, this happens when I pick Dx9 or Dx10/Dx11. Something in the new patch broke something, because I just played CiV like a month ago with the same hardware. Maybe I need to update to a new driver or something. I’m tired, and don’t care right now, in any case. Sigh.

EDIT - Well, I guess I care enough to get some info together and put a post on the support forum. If anyone else is getting an error like this, hopefully this thread will get some attention.

Sorry if this has already been answered, but what is the verdict on skipping Gods and Kings, and just going straight to Brave New World? Most of the reviews sort of allude to Brave New World helping to flesh out the Religion and Espionage from Gods and Kings.

GMG sent out the keys for Xcom right on time. But this is is a pretty big fail on their part.

According to WikiPedia: The expansion pack will include and expand on all of the mechanics of Civilization V: Gods & Kings but will not include its Civilizations.
