First Civ that doesn’t follow Empire’s old formula? I keep hoping that when I get out of this fucking endless training today, go home, upload the patch, etc. that I find Panzer General + 4x.

Yikes, the concluding paragraphs of the Eurogamer review are pretty harsh, although the rest is positive.
This makes… three or so sites that have talked about pretty significant-sounding problems with the AI, especially on the diplomacy front. I’d be curious to hear first-hand comments from people here once they’re far enough along in the game.

I admit to being somewhat disappointed in the opening credits scene/music. Unimportant to be sure, and I wouldn’t even care, except Civ 4’s was just sooo good. It always really got me into the mindset of the game. It would have been difficult to top or even match, but it doesn’t really look like they tried.

I uploaded a few small mods. Queen of the Iceni adds the Celtic civilization to the game and changes the unit graphics to larger single unit formations. Legions allows stacked combat (removes the 1 unit per title limitation).
Both are available in game by going to the Mods -> Browse Mods -> Online.
I should have held off like I said I would when I found out Soren left.

PapaSmurf,
What are you specifically not liking about the game? Personally, the changes they’ve made are really grabbing me.

I was browsing on my phone so when I saw this I thought “What the hell, mods already?”. Then I scrolled over to the left and saw who posted it. I am no longer surprised :) I’ll have to check them out when I get home, thanks Kael.
I thought the movie was way, way better than the Civ IV opening movie. The music isn’t Baba Yetu, but they were never going to top that anyway, and it’s otherwise fine.
Still getting the launcher problem with DX10/11, though. Verifying the game files shows that one file is corrupt, and Steam says that it will redownload the file. Then it does download a 22 MB file, but if you verify again, it’s still corrupt. The rumor in the Steam forums is that the corrupt file is the launcher itself, and if you swap the names on the CivilizationV.exe and CivilizationV_DX10.exe files, you can fool the launcher into running the DX10 version (just remember to select the DX9 version in the launcher window after renaming the files). I’m off to see if that actually works. Annoying.

I thought there would be a way to access the content through Steam itself. Thanks Woolen Horde. I would have never have guessed that you have to browse there manually.
The diplomacy is the one concrete change that bugs me.
The rest of it is that I don’t like this whole CivLite feel.

PapaSmurf,
That is what I was asking about. What do you mean by “CivLite”.

I miss the graphic indications of total city production, food, and gold in city view. The long line of hammers produced or the line of gold coins generated just had more charm than seeing +12 or +5.
Okay, I found a real fix for the DX10/11 issue that doesn’t require renaming files. If you can’t click on the DX10/11 option int he launcher, and have garbled text, go to your C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam folder, right click on Steam.exe, and select Properties. Go to the compatibility tab. Is Steam set to run in compatibility mode for Vista? If so, then you need to turn that off. Mine was, and I have no idea WHY it was, but unchecking compatibility mode fixed the launcher problem and allowed me to run the DX10/11 version with no problems. Weird.

I don’t know if this comment is actually true or not, but i have read two random comments from players and one review that indicates the same thing, the AI is perhaps too warlike, unlike in other Civilizations where you could have peaceful or more or less peaceful games.

This is my first civilization game and only played the demo, but only moving some units (accidentally) through someone elses territory got me a war declaration. Oh and all those random events where different rulers constantly wanted to ally myself with them against another country.
However I totally felt that addiction that makes you play until it’s suddenly early morning instead of late night.

I haven’t gotten in yet (30 more seconds of patching!), but that’s a bummer. It was always a great feeling when you would look at a city one turn and on the next turn, they had to change the spacing to fit all your hammers.
Got my feet wet over lunch. Enjoying it.

Enough about Civ 5 the game. With real reviews finally starting to trickle in, it’s clear that it has some problems, as expected. What I want to know about is the Civ 5 Limited Edition set. I need to decide if I’m going to pick it up while it can still easily be had locally. Any impressions of the Limited Edition contents, especially the art book and the documentary DVD, would be appreciated.

Interface question Kael. After I downloaded the Mod through the in-game menu, it says it is complete. But when I go to “installed Mods”, none are installed. So how do I go from downloading the mod to installing it? Do I have to exit the game and find the mod in a directory somewhere to install it? Or is there a way to do it from within the game?
