Yeah I’d say the tech quotes are experiencing a significant gravitas shortfall.

Bah, you guys hate fun. I like plenty of the funny quotes, and find the quality overall just fine.

All I’m saying is that the quotes stood far back when the gravitas was handed out.

I’m definitely of the general mindset that games take themselves way too seriously, so lightening up on the gravitas is more of a feature than a bug for me.

I’m not opposed to lightening up. It just struck me that the quotes have very little gravitas indeed.

… But Ailes, Lorn Michaels, Dave Barry, Scott Adams? This person picking the quotes has a certain worldview, let’s say, and it seems a bit narrower than before.

He’s just another victim of the ambient morality.

I’d be wary of projecting too much politics into the tech quote choices in Civilization ;)

I realize the complexity that it would add to the task, but my personal wish would be for actual native-language VO for quotes, with localized translations in the text. You’d lose some Sean Bean, though, which would be a shame.

Agreed, all around.

I may be congenital optimist, but I think a frank exchange of views will reveal the precise nature of the catastrophe here. It may be an honest mistake, but I think we can use psychology to figure out where these quotes fall on the ethics gradient. Now look what you made me do!

sigh

“I only understand friendship or scorched earth.”
Does that quote make the person seem respectable, praiseworthy, or good? No. Civ using this quote doesn’t profess any admiration for the man who said it. If anything, it points out a personality defect for the world to see.

Gravitas or silly, I don’t know, but I feel the quotes sucked. It’s like they picked a word in common with the technology, and that was the quote, no matter how little it might fit. I hated them.

That’s a perfectly valid outlook on the choices. I enjoyed them, but that’s cool.

Hand me the gun and ask me again. I am all through with this niceness and negotiation stuff.

yeah, regardless about how I feel about the individual quotes, I get the feeling that a lot of them were found by googling the phrase in question and taking a result from the first page. That doesn’t mean that some of them don’t work fine, but it’s a bit intellectually lazy.

FWIW, the Chichen Itza quote is on the fifth result I get by googling “chichen itza quotes”. And the Scorched Earth quote is the only suitably short quote in the first result I get by googling “scorched earth quotes”, and is the page title/link text for the third result.

continued edit: I’m going to get bored of this project, but not yet. The Steven Wright quote about Banking is the first quote on the first result page from googling “banking quotes”.

I knew something sounded familiar, lol

Sorry, I jumped in with “gravitas” and I just had to keep going.

well, I’d have to find a recording setup, but if people have suggestions for better/additional quotes for some of the techs or wonders, I’m pretty sure I know how to patch in new ones. Or if you just want any of the audio as .wav files, it’s not as complicated as I thought it would be…

I had no idea Sean Bean posted on QT3, that’s awesome!

They should’ve just used quotes from Pauly Shore movies for everything. Bonus! Pauly Shore would do the VO for cheap!
