Classic Air Combat Sim Recommendations

Yeah, I wish we could legally point everyone to ExoDOS for this sort of thing.

Looking at the video of this just gives me the feels. I love those 90s clean dithered polygons.

It’s such a loving mix of Gunship and LHX.

Rowans’ battle of Britain… wow. I played a lot of that, but the strategic layer was incomprehensible to me. I also remember how I had one pretty good slalom through bombers and knocked down a few, and then another twenty tries where I was smacked mericlessly from the sky. Good sim for it’s time, even if the bombers were made of titanium.

Hey y’all, I found a Discord server that should be compatible with our interests. ;) It’s called the Combat Flight Sim Tavern.

Gunship 2000 is very tough without a joystick.

So this morning, I streamed 1992’s Comanche: Maximum Overkill, which I hadn’t played in ages, and the oddest thing happened. Something I’d never seen in any flight sim/game ever.

So I finished the seventh mission in the training campaign, and then went to mission eight, where I died within three seconds because there a billion enemies in front of you. Afterwards, the game told me, “Your performance has set back the campaign.”

I was confused, but imagine my ire when I went back to the campaign screen and saw that I had to repeat mission seven again before even attempting mission eight again! They knocked me back a mission because I died so quickly in mission eight.

What. The. Fuck?

I might just not even stream more Comanche, because this seems insanely player-hostile, and I just don’t have the patience for it. Do y’all remember Comanche being this…mean toward the player? I’d either forgotten or didn’t notice at the time. Just insane.

90s Brian would have just soldiered on ;)

I think I did. Now though? Noperino.

So the Steam version of Gunship 2000 is thisssss close to being ready, I feel. I played it today with no issues – except for the lack of the original roster, which still rankles me – and had a great time.

I even played it for the first time with a gamepad (don’t @ me, this laptop doesn’t have a joystick) and it was honestly pretty great!

The big issue now is the original Gunship, which is still crashing for folks.

Okay, after playing Gunship for several missions (I always died in the second or third mission because that game is TOUGH) with no crashes, I can finally recommend the Gunship/Gunship 2000 pack. To Atari’s credit, the fixed the problems, added the docs and expansion to GS2000, and it all seems as it should have at launch now.

I couldn’t find my manual, so…

Nice. This is one of the few box sets I’ve kept around.

Yeah. Honestly one of my favorite boxes of the era.

This and the F-22 TAW box, with its (now laughingly dated) Jane’s-alike aircraft guide are the GOATs. The F4 binder (sold mine off a long time ago) is up there too.

Yeah, I have that manual. Not the box anymore.

I got some new shirts.

Wife took the pics and added the backgrounds with Canva.

Now we need a YouTube series to go with those sweet thumbnails!

This is a fun watch.

Wait, I’ve covered those on my channel, is that what you mean?

I did not know you had a channel. That’s cool though, I’ll check it out :)

I just mean that if I was trawling YouTube, and I saw one of those as a thumbnail for a video, I’d be like “That guy means business”.
