Here are the two “tackles,” side by side.

Someone poisoned the 130-year-old Live Oaks at Auburn’s Toomer’s Corner. They tested the soil on Jan. 28, the day after a guy called Paul Finebaum’s radio show and claimed that he had poisoned them with a powerful herbicide. The guy, “Al from Dadeville,” claimed to be a Bama fan. Dadeville is a small down about 30 miles from Auburn.

I’m seeing on Twitter that there’s a 10:30 a.m. (central) press conference today to announce an arrest.

The trees are not expected to survive.

Class-Y.

I was thinking of starting a new thread for this story, decided not to. At least most Bama fans seem to be just as upset about this as Auburn fans. Great article on the story from SI.

I love aggravating rival fans as much as anyone, but that is just despicable. What a class act.

the fuck is wrong with people?

Edit:This Guy (presumed innocent ect…)

I played my old alto sax at quite a few pep rallies at Toomers. The more I think about it, the sadder I get. Every school has its sacred space, and it sucks to have it defiled. And this goes for Auburn fans who have vandalized stuff on the UA campus.

He does it and then calls a radio show and brags about it? That’s a criminal mastermind right there. Idiot.

Fuckin’ people. I hate them.

My mom is a librarian at Auburn’s library and has a horticulture degree. So she is distraught/furious for multiple reasons.

I think die in a fire is too strong, but…

If it is indeed him, he not only did it and call a radio show and brag about it, but he also gave his middle name and the small town he lived in.

Dude should have just given his SSN while he was at it.

War going to jail!

I saw this movie once with this dead tree called The Tree of Pain and an Austrian being crucified on it…

My favorite part was in the radio call where the host asks him “isn’t that illegal?” The guy answers “you think I care?”

I think he cares now.

No he doesn’t. He’s still riding the emotional high of what he thinks is redneck justice (because some kids made fun of Bear Bryant). He may never come down from it.

Even a redneck takes a $50,000 bond seriously.

If he weren’t a low-watt bulb, he wouldn’t have done it in the first place.

I’m an adamant opponent of capital punishment, but there are some acts that push me really close to wanting to push that lever. This guy is lucky he was arrested before he got lynched.

It’s possible that the trees survive. A similar thing happened to the treaty oak in austin, tx and they managed to save it (well, for certain values of “save”… it lost about 2/3rds of its top).

Hope he has fun spending 10 years in jail!

His public defender will be working overtime to make sure there are no Auburn fans on the jury or on the bench. They might have to move the trial out of state. :)

And I’m sure there are legions of Bama fans who did a face-palm when they saw the mug shot of that guy, who just fulfills every nasty stereotype of Alabama fandom.

Right now they’re just hoping he didn’t kill every living thing within a decent radius of Toomer’s. Plus, there’s the groundwater to worry about. I guess that’s why the Feds are involved.

Wtf? Killing trees is one of the crimes that makes you the most angry?

I feel really bad for this guy’s family. He’s just a retired, rural grandpa with kids and grandkids, and one stupid act of misguided team loyalty has turned all their lives upside-down.
