Sometimes I feel like Donald Glover is trying to pull some sort of Joaquin Phoenix tribute: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eUda_IFYO50
Well it’s no season 2, but I was happy to find that both episodes tonight were way better than I expected. Looking forward to good things this season.

The scrubs bit about the guy only being on the first 6 episodes was pretty spot on. Otherwise not great episodes, but the first one had a ton of exposition to position the show moving forward so I can forgive it. Episode two was just plain weak, but not caricature weak like much of season 4.
I’m kind of in a spot where I can’t help but liking the episodes. The first few seasons did such a good job of pulling me in and making me feel like I was a member of the group who only watched and never spoke, that I can forgive a few weak episodes (or even a weak season) because watching an episode of Community feels like hanging out with my friends. I care more about watching the characters than seeing what they do, if that makes any sense.
These episodes felt so much more…right than anything from the gas leak year. Great stuff.
Just saw these, and it’s great to see the show back to normal. I loved the gas leak year references.

Man. These two episodes were GRREAAT.
I’m not sure how much of it is psychological, but I really liked the episodes last night, especially the first one.
Thought both episodes were both great. As much as I probably said Harmon brought issues to the show that it might be nice to ditch, this felt much better than a lot of what I saw last year.

I thought the show found its footing in the second episode. But both were leagues beyond last season. I love it when they let Pudi cut loose like they did with the Cage impersonations.
That was by far the best part of this season opening, especially Abed’s reaction afterward.

The first episode was good, the second was great. I nearly lost it when the teacher told Abed not to delve too deeply. I am trying to figure out if he maliciously designed the course to fuck Abed over or if it was a (un)happy accident. I mean we know he knew it would happen, but did he want it to? Revenge for the previous teacher, who he claimed to hate? Or was Abed just an acceptable casualty for a topic so awesome?

A string of Excel related incidences at work in the past few weeks (and really, intermittently over the last decade too) made me really laugh at the Dean trying to learn Excel.
Jonathan Banks was such a treat.

I hope he’s Pierce’s permanent replacement.

We were very surprised to see the Chevy Chase cameo. I thought he had cut all his ties with that show last season, and would stay away especially now that Harmon’s back. But there he was…in ghost/hologram form.
Yeah, really phenomenal. A little cheeseball in how they got them all back at school (it reminds me of the hell my players in my Pathfinder tabletop RPG campaign put me through when they all decide they wanna switch characters right in the middle of an important quest, so I’m constantly writing people in and out of the group), but eh, it’s Community, so it’s got to be at Greendale. I’m cool with that.
Was a little sad to see how quickly Jeff “backtracked” after his failure, but to be fair, I guess a lot of them did (Annie’s taking drug samples from work, Abed is immature and not following his dreams, Shirley’s messed up over her husband, etc.) and the whole point is that they’re trying to re-heal themselves or something. Dunno.
Loved NewPierce, loved the OldPierce moment, and am extremely entertained by the notion that most/all of their old classmates are still bumming around there, bwahahaha.
The ending scene in Ep2 had me in tears. Oh god.

Troy’s tear had me laughing my ass off in that final scene. Leave it to Harmon to make a funny scene into a tragedy then back to comedy again in the space of seconds.
Huh. Watched the first episode on NBC.com via VPN, then went into town, now it won’t play, claims it’s not available in my region. Hulu works though, so it’s all good.

There was an interview with Harmon about how they pulled that off. Apparently as part of the agreement for Chase to leave the show he wasn’t allowed back on the set so they took a skeleton crew and filmed him at a different location, which also made it easier to keep the cameo a surprise until airing.
