Screw Glover, I’ll take the new crew if he won’t be on board! Paget Brewster is an epic character actor and deserves to be in the movie. As does Jonathan Banks and Keith David.

Sad thing I learned yesterday: the actor who played Leonard passed away last year :-(

Shut up @ArmandoPenblade!

I don’t need that sort of sadness right now.

There are three really good articles that I felt got into the behind-the-scenes dynamics while the show was airing.

  1. A Reddit Ask Me Anything interview with Dan Harmon, after season 3 ended, the series had a shaky future, and Dan was off the show for “reasons”: https://www.reddit.com/r/IAmA/comments/yne9x/i_am_dan_harmon_creator_of_community_writer_of/

  2. A roundtable interview with Yvette, Gillian, Alison, and writer Megan Ganz where they start crying with tears of love, camaraderie, and joy: https://www.thedailybeast.com/community-alison-brie-yvette-nicole-brown-gillian-jacobs-and-megan-ganz-roundtable

  3. A This American Life episode where Megan Ganz repeatedly asks Dan Harmon for an apology for the things he did that forced him off the show: https://www.thisamericanlife.org/674/get-a-spine/act-one-5

That’s what sprang to mind. Oh, and the Rick and Morty joke where Rick and his ex-girlfriend, a planetary hivemind, reunite, which seems to parallel Dan Harmon’s Community experience: https://youtu.be/o8Bi2RLiphY

Season 4 is nothing more than glorified fan fiction, and even the show itself basically acknowledges that it should be skipped & considered non-canon.

“And Dan Harmon is back, thank god!” ~Joel McHale on season 5

Yup. It really derailed the whole arc of the show, too, which is a huge loss that it never really recovers from even when Harmon comes back. Cornbread’s right, though, that it’s the single best advertisement for Harmon’s talent ever.

Worth noting that Harmon did apologize, in a way that felt real, and heartfelt, and that apology was generally accepted. He’s a hugely talented but severely damaged person, likely an alcoholic to boot, but that apology resonated.

Oh yes, he certainly did! And it was interesting that it took many iterations of apologies before they got to one that stuck.

Sure. It’s never easy to admit a mistake. It’s particularly embarrassing when it’s personal in such a way that makes you look like a shitheel.

Age 93! He was almost 85 years old when he was trotting down the hallway shooting at Jeff Winger in Modern Warfare. He had a great run.

Everyone’s playing!”

As Jeff Winger once said “Thank you, Leonard…”

I think I need to rewatch it, just to track all the side characters.

Or even the main characters! I caught something new just a few months ago in an episode I had seen a dozen times.

“What have you been up to, Abed?”
“Not much.”

You mean when Abed was involved with a pregnant girl, and was their at the birth? I only found out about it recently myself.

I don’t think this was part of the regular show.

Also, when the movie does come out, should we create a thread in the movie section? I vote yes just because.

Hah, never seen those before, and they were delightful!

Hadn’t seen that either. Very cool!

God, the season 3 finale is just sublime. It’s peak sitcom television. It’s this amazing mix of high concept insanity, seasons-long group dynamics payoff, genuine character growth moments, nifty cameos, schmaltzy emotional beats, and really satisfying potential sendoffs. And Jeff’s final Winger Speech is weirdly and particularly poignant right now. We don’t have to let this be the Darkest Timeline ❤️

Tell us how you feel about season 4. I think it might be okay.

There’s honestly a lot I like about S4. It’s totally solid sitcom television and has some great moments and bits. I’ve heard folks accuse it of being Community fanfiction taken to the most extreme level, but it’s not as if Harmon was immune to the lure of self-homage for its own sake. It pushed arcs forward that Harmon had floundered around with for years, for better or for worse – at least it was change.

That said, to specifically answer your question about how I feel about it, I generally feel a lot less. There’s some heartwarming moments, and obviously the cast are just excellent and deeply bonded by that point, so they sell a lot of the lines, but it rarely hits quite the level of schmaltzy emotional over-excess that I crave. I don’t know if that quality of Harmon’s is necessarily good in an objective sense, but it’s almost exactly what I’m looking for in entertainment.
