Hated it.

This was the first super-high-concept episode that I have liked in a long time.

“You’ re all in Purgatory, and I’m the devil!”

I hope you said it like this:

I thought I wasn’t going to like it but I laughed way too much.

Welcome… to ladders! applause

Was it Shutter Island they were sending up? I loved Hodgman BTW.

Well of course. I did, however, give the L&O episode two snaps up in a circle.

The vignettes had odd rhythm. I felt like I could hear crickets every time they started a new one.

I liked when it veered into Lost-ish territory however. Garrett speaking with that voice? Tee-hee.

I don’t think they were sending anything up too specifically, more like a general storytelling trope. They pulled the “the entire show is you in a mental hospital” bit on Buffy, and the mention of Purgatory must have been a dig at Lost.

Yeah, it’s a staple of genre television.

Between this and the news announced today that Community is moving to 8:30 on Fridays with a lead-in from Whitney of all things, I’m pretty sure this next half-season will not only be the last Community every made but also the worst.

With this and NBC effectively canning The Sing-Off, the only reality/competition show I’ve ever managed to enjoy, I think I might be able to take down the enormous pair of rabbit ears currently angled toward my window from behind the TV.

Damn, they’re moving Whitney to Fridays? Oh well, it was nice while it lasted.

Why the worst? What does being put into a bad slot and getting bad ratings have to do with the quality of the show that Dan Harmon and company produce for their fans in this last season?

Word on the street (and in the link I posted) is that Harmon’s not contracted on for the next season at all yet. Might consult, might eventually relent and sign-on, or might just be off the show entirely.

Love it or hate it, Community is strongly Harmon’s creation and his essence and sensibilities suffuse it pretty thoroughly. While writers like Megan Ganz are incredibly talented and the cast are phenomenal, a Harmon-less Community sounds a lot like a Larry David-free Seinfeld.

If you go into it expecting the worst, you’ll probably find what you seek.

Don’t get me wrong: we could end up with a Brandon Sanderson-takes-over-Wheel-of-Time situation here. Those are just the exceptions, in my experience though. Needless to say, I am hoping and praying that NBC relents on whatever is holding Harmon back.

And that they bring Sing Off back. Seriously, if I lose that, I’m down to two shows I watch in the new season (Community and Mentalist) :(

Troy and Abed in the Morning! - Nights!

Best part of the episode right there. While the bit with the psychiatrist was mildly amusing the episode felt disjointed and flat throughout. I hope it’s leading up to something better in the season finale.

Not being snarky, but what does that mean in this context, “flat”?

Flat usually means devoid of the usual energy; they’re just going through the motions, dialing it in, etc, etc.

I thought it was a great episode. Too many people want to be the first to call it when a show jumps the shark.

I laughed way more than I should have at all the scenes with them in the ward
