Actually, it does. It happens pretty frequently, especially with smaller sites that can't afford to antagonize publishers. Pan a game, and risk losing the ad dollars.
Maybe the critics themselves aren't on the take, but editors listen if the ad sales team tell them that Publisher X won't commit because of a prior bad review.
However, you are correct on your second point: the much more common situation is that the writers themselves aren't critics...or even journalists. They're writers who don't understand the craft of criticism and get as caught up in the marketing swing as everyone else.
So now Tom is not only not allowed to have his own opinion on games, but we shouldn't look here for "advice" because of some nonsensical reasoning you don't really justify?

Listen, eventhough Company of Heroes 2 is a flop, demented circus monkeys like you shouldn't be allowed to review games, do yourself and all of us a favor and hit the bricks
Resident Evil 6 was a AAA game, and it got trashed by most reviewers. Haze was a AAA game that was highly anticipated on the PS3, that got horrible reviews. Alone in the Dark was a AAA game, which was highly anticipated, that got bad reviews as well. Tony Hawk Ride was a AAA title, but it sucked and it got bad reviews.
Generally, bad games get bad reviews, good games get favorable reviews. Developers don't pay reviewers off. A lot of reviewers struggle to make ends meet.
Oh and this review site blows. Never a legit review. Always have assed review. GTFO and let other companies who are just as shady as this site review,all you reviewers are shady craps.

If he's just "a guy who enjoys different games" Then he should be writing USER reviews, not CRITIC reviews. You can't just omit every single key detail from the game, lie, paint it as a piece of shit, then pass that off as a genuine critique.
This man is far from a critic, and he should not come anywhere near that kind of title.
Critics assess a game on its merits and shortcomings, not on how they happen to be feeling, on the particular afternoon that they wrote it.
