O’Reilly was on the Regis and Whatsername show this morning. I just heard a blurb on the radio where he said, “60 million dollars because O’Reilly did blah blah blah. And I finally said, enough is enough.” Something like that. Did any of you people catch the interview?

Sorry to take over this thread, but I heard that, too. He basically said he is a big mouth on and off the air and he is a target for attacks daily. He painted himself as a tortured victim, but said it was expected since he was a popular figure in the country. He said his lawyers saidhis counter-suit and the fallout from not settling could destroy him and he said he was making a stand. Don’t tell anyone, but O’Reilly might be spinning a little.

I read and listened to all of the info on this brouhaha, and there’s a long transcript of his harassing call, and it sounds like it must have lasted 20 minutes or so. So at what point did it become offensive to her? And how long does it take to hang up the phone?
The other thing that seems a little out of kilter - if you ever listen to O’Reilly on the radio, and he talks about famous people being sued, he’s pretty paranoid about doing anything that could lead to a suit. He’s commented numerous times that just going to certain parties could result in his being exposed to being attacked or sued, and he’s commented that part of hving the dough and being a public figure is that people are lined up to see if they can find a way to sue you, and thus you have to go out of your way to avoid anything that could ever give even the perception of impropriety. O’Reilly is a lot of things, but he’s never struck me as being dumb.
Add on to this what appears to be the fact that this lady wasn’t going to go public, that O’Reilly and company decided to make it public, and it does sound like an extortion attempt. If so, then good for him saying the hell with it, let’s go to court.
OTOH, if tapes are produced (after all, we all keep tape recorders hooked up to phones in case we get a 30 minute long sexual phone call we don’t want to listen to, right? ;) ) that show he really was harassing her… never mind!

My conspiracy theory:
She had had enough left for CNN and told people there how things were. Meanwhile, Fox is beating CNN about the head and neck with their evening ratings and sees an opportunity for a producer to do a little work on the down low (as the kids say). She goes back, O’Reilly gives her a good talking to, via a late night phone call, of course, and she is accepted back into the fold. SHe has her recording device prepped and ready for a few months of phone action and boom, big story to drag down Fox and O’Reilly.
There, I said it. Probably 8% true, but the whole thing is just weird. Hmmm, he’s been jacking off and talking dirty. 19 mins. is a little lewd, but one more minute and I am hanging up. That’s what sexual harrassment Panda teaches. 19 mins. = ribald silliness. Sexual harrassment = 20 mins.+

To me, it sounds like you can believe everyone. O’Reilly was creating a hostile working environment, so she left. Later, she came back after making him promise to be good. At some point, I don’t know before or after she returned, she got the idea of getting a settlement out of it. O’Reilly decided that whatever he had done wouldn’t appear that damaging and decided to sue for extortion.
Nobody looks particularly good here, but it seems the real risk is on the producer and her lawyer, if O’Reilly has a good case for extortion. It may be that all the stuff that’s damaging to O’Reilly is already out.
That’s most likely the case.
