well, I bought it. it looks pretty good so far.
I really need to get back to this game. I can’t remember why I fell away, but I completed at least one of the trials (oh yeah, You’re Just a Commoner), and it was a ton of fun.

Patch 3.18 for Conquest of Elysium 3 has been released
Note that after patching, if you load a savegame, you should save it immediately, then quit and restart the game and load again to avoid a potential issue with battles not working correctly.
It always annoys me when a game pops up a manual from within the executable, and Steam still thinks the game is running. I’ve had CoE3 going for the last 20 hours or so.
Stupid Steam.
I’ve won a game now with all the classes. I created pretty easy games so I could build up and see all the lategame stuff. I think I mentioned before that I love how much weight and feeling is built into some of these 2D sprites.
Before I purchased the game, I was worried that it would feel too lightweight. I ended up treating it like most strategy-tactical games: the strategic layer was just an excuse to set up epic fights against the AI or killer independents like wizards and beholders. I mostly ignored the AI until I was ready. Anyway, I thought the light strategic layer was fine.
I suppose the only problem is none of the classes grabbed me enough to want to play with them some more. I don’t have the urge to try the challenges or anything. That’s okay. I got more than enough out of the game.

One thing I didn’t like is trying to gauge whose army was stronger when you both had mega stacks. I wish they used some type of command point mechanic to limit the stack size. I rather have more frequent smaller battles than huge mega stacks.

@Tim James
If you only played the game vanilla with menu settings as a single player then you have only begun. :)
Doing the Challenge ladder at the www.CoE-3.com forum
Playing in Team mode (even if its with the AI)
And Scenario Maps that let you play against settings and nations that are in the game but dont show up on the menu as a choice
As I said, none of the classes compelled me to go back and play again. Some of them took a few tries before I got a win, so I feel like I’ve had a good tour and I can move on to the rest of my backlog.
All of a sudden, a patch out of nowhere. One of the patch notes just says “Winged Monkeys”.
I was planning on playing other stuff tonight, but now I’m really tempted to start up CoE3 instead…

- A second demon mastery did not always result in more spells, fixed.
- New graphics for some units.
- Necrotod only hypnotizes every second round.
- Winged Monkeys.
- Improved pluralization.
- Support for new screen resolutions.
- Network bug fix.
- Reduced memory usage.
- Serial number shown on preferences screen.
- Linux: ALSA playback could stop after an underrun, fixed.
- Mac: Retina displays could get wrong fullscreen size, fixed.
I like the improved pluralization. I imagine the author thinking hard of what should be the plural of his twisted creatures [this is funnier in non-English languages with more complex plurals :P].
Played this a bunch over Thanksgiving weekend (yay for linux) and I gotta say, I really love the joyful imagination that has gone into this (and Dominions too, of course). It’s exactly like what I imagine I would have created when I was twelve (had I the gumption to see it through). Wouldn’t it be cool if you could upgrade the prophet to be an incarnation of Baal (even though you’ve already won the game by that point)? …if we had this arcane system of dividing up tithes from (only the converted) villages between all the players’ archbishops (even though you probably won’t get more than one player of that faction per game)? …if you could upgrade your spawned dwarves not once but twice into fire or cold resistant varieties as the situation demanded and you had the gems (even though actually finding fire or cold using enemies is pretty rare)? And not giving a whit for AI compatibility, game balance, or (alas) user interface.
…which is what did it for me in the end. By the time I’d exploited my dwarven production lines to the max, the amount of clicking it took to get my armies built, upgraded, consolidated, and to the front meant that I couldn’t wait for it to be over. At least the AI wasn’t competent enough (or mean-spirited enough) to keep me running in circles after it for too long. I’m sure I’ll be back, sooner or later.
Steam just updated this to version 3.20:
This weekend I went on a Dominions 4 binge, and at the end of it decided to play a quick game of CoE3 as a little “palate cleanser” before going to bed. It had been probably a year since I’d played it last. I then proceeded to play for another few hours…I just love this little game. Then they go and update it the very next day! So, so cool.
Yeah, the update has me hankering to go back. Time to remember where I have it… Gamersgate? Desura? Steam?

28th March 2014 - Conquest of Elysium 3 for tablets is in the making
Currently CoE3 is being ported to run on Android tablets. It is looking promising and the first test game was fun, despite certain things not working properly yet. You’ll probably need a full size tablet (9+ inch) to run the game. We haven’t tried it on anything smaller, but I suspect it will be difficult to select troops on a small tablet…
So, the long awaited Android port of CoE3 is becoming a reality and thus the dastardly Illwinter plan to destroy all productivity of TBS gaming fans moves another step forward!
A pity if they can’t get it to work in the Nexus 7, as it’s the most popular Android tablet.
Not until it comes to iOS, if ever. :-)
Wow. That would be an insta-buy for my iPad.
Will they make it touch screen capable for window 8?
