anyone know how to suss out what is causing a constant ding-donging usb-detection type sound in windows? there is nothing appearing in the system tray for bubble alerts.
First thing to check is make sure you don’t have that sound set for anything else in your Windows Sounds, otherwise you might be thinking it’s USB when it’s not. Is it happening while you are doing anything in particular?
Unplug all of your USB goo-gadgetry. If it stops, then you might have a faulty connector/device or a loose cable. If it continues, disable the USB controllers. If that works, reinstall the drivers or buy a new motherboard or something. If it continues, you have a program open that uses the ding.
Yeah so, reinstalling the drivers probably won’t work and something got fucked up in XP’s terrible USB detection device drivers.
Expanding on this, do to Device Manager and uninstall the “root usb hub” and then reboot so it reinstalls. But it sounds like a loose connection or faulty USB device (do you have a hub connected?)
Sometimes the little plastic guide thingy in USB sockets breaks off at the root and causes the connection to be flaky. I’ve had this happen a couple of times.
it’s a client at work on a fancy 12" hp business tablet in a dock with 4 usb ports out back. i’ve asked them to see if they get the constant ding-donging when it’s out of the dock.
no mobo or driver reinstalling here.
