I remember the story about the cops who shut themselves away from danger and refused to intervene as someone was being stabbed. Cops aren’t heroes for wearing a badge. Rather, it just gives them more opportunities to become one. As such, many of their special protections should really be pulled back, not that I’d think I’d fine many here who would disagree.

There is a radiolab episode where they talk about this specific case.

That’s an amazing read, thank you.

Geezus.

Or from one of the most pro-cop people I actually follow (other than the few cops):

Goddamnit, that man didn’t have to die. What a sad story, one that is unfortunately repeated over and over and over. Why do we refuse to address these problems and let the carnage continue?

He had not committed any crime and he didn’t want to leave his car. All they had to do was leave him there.

Man, there is not a single action that police on-the-scene took in that story that makes a lick of sense.

Right? They’re not there to arrest him. If he’s being “difficult” or they’re unable to help his car get unstuck, just leave him. Or try to contact friends or family or something. Yet somehow they go from 'Hello, I’m really scared and my car is stuck, can you help me?" to shooting him to death. What the fuck.

It sadly made sense to me in the context of how often it happens.

Police officers are butt-hurt when they don’t get instant compliance, respond with deadly force. On occasion, instant compliance is also responded to with deadly force.

Police report the next day was he tried to stab an officer.

Dude had a knife inside a car with the windows up. How you gonna stab an officer?

What those cops need is more funding.

Plus paid leave, and therapy. I mean, they must be traumatised from having to kill killing someone.

We also need more of them. That’s always the answer. More cops and more money for them.

It’s going to work any day now.

Wait! If everyone is a cop, we get…peace?

Yep! Just like how we have so little gun violence, what with all the people owning guns and all.

Look, all I’m saying is if we make everyone a police officer that’s basically the same as UBI and Social Security rolled into one. Efficiency!
