I think that’s pretty much the start of every zombie movie ever.

Yep, have been thinking of Contagion and that bit at the end of Rise of the Planet of the Apes

I agree that there is no point in panic but I am losing hope.

I’m very good at dealing with the changes that have come in response to Covid without focusing on what ifs and the future but as an expat teacher with aging parents in the US I was hoping that travel would settle down to something predictable even if different than pre-Covid. The last couple of weeks have removed that hope by showing how quickly the world can go back to mandating long quarantines on entry or banning entry (including transit).

This is temporary. Maybe it will be new normal, but they’ll reopen fairly quickly.

Define this. If you mean the current round of travel restrictions then sure. I’m less positive that the cycle will be temporary and that we will fairly quickly get ahead of the variants such that we aren’t on the edge of another round of restrictions.

It will be when a variant is done, we’ll get time between rounds of restrictions, until a variant doesn’t come that we can’t handle.

Or the world just wipes its hands of all restrictions and goes full Florida out of frustration.

I think this is most likely in 2022, unless we get a much more lethal strain across all age groups.

We’ve managed to go back and forth to the US twice this year, but there isn’t any chance we will get to South Africa (where C’s family is) anytime soon. We were just thinking that, post-booster, we would give it a try when this new variant came along. As it is, we have some relatives that are now trapped there and can’t get back to the UK.

I’m starting to feel like this guy.

Having any kind of empathy is just too tiring anymore.

The travel restrictions are pretty silly. If Omicron is more infectious than Delta it’s already everywhere. Focus should be on testing everybody traveling, even if they’re vaccinated.

We should know a lot more about Omicron in 2-3 weeks. Remember, deaths always lag infections by a couple weeks. It may be that Omicron is both much more infectious than Delta and less deadly, which would actually be pretty good news.

That’s what i was thinking. How wonderful would it be if a non-lethal variant came around and took over?

I don’t think there is such a thing as a non-lethal respiratory infection. People who are weakened by other factors are always at danger from such things. But something at influenza levels of lethality would be very manageable and welcome.

True, but even the regular flu kills lots of people. But I understand what you meant.

Managed to get a booster at a mass vaccination site here in Cuenca. They’re using AstraZeneca as the booster for people who had Moderna before, since there is no Moderna available here. The process was quick and well-executed, about 15 minutes from the time we arrived until the time we left.

I felt fine most of the rest of the day, then woke up with fever and chills, a bad headache and even aches in my joints. This lasted all night and into the next day, so I spent the day lying on the couch listening to an audiobook. Last night I slept fine and I feel normal today.

This was the strongest reaction to a vaccination I can recall ever having, much worse than the original two doses of Moderna. I wonder if that’s because of the mix-and-match approach or just luck of the draw? Probably the latter since C didn’t seem to have any reaction at all. Anyway, we are both boosted and happy to have managed it without another round trip to Florida.

I got that with my first shot of AstraZeneca back in April. Had the second shot in June and there were no side effects at all.

Yeah, it was the most severe vaccination reaction I can recall, even worse than the shotgun vax cocktails I used to endure in the Army. But it passed quickly, so there is that!

Woohoo! Was finally able to get my oldest the shot. The local county is running a no appointments taken, walk in clinic at a nearby office park. Which given how thoroughly CVS was falling on its face by me, seriously WTF for having ONE pharmacy in the county, and neighboring county, of 1.2 million people with pediatric doses, was needed.

Went yesterday, was in and out pretty quickly. Got my booster while there as well.

With a 2nd grader it wasn’t a great thing not being able to get that.

Hat tip to another Qt3er for putting me on to the county clinic. Thanks for that!

For what it’s worth, my original two shots were Moderna and I got a Pfizer booster last Friday. I actually had a much lesser reaction than I was expecting, just soreness in the injection site.

Congrats Craig!

County is a great option! Just today, we realized our daughter was late on a tdap shot and it took just a few minutes to schedule something first thing tomorrow. I appreciate that resource being sized correctly for our metro area.
