So the CDC was like, we assumed someone was working on this.

Private sector is working on it but… they’re limited. It’s not like all these healthcare systems have some sort of one giant leading body. I mean there are a lot of labs and groups getting ready or already in the thick of it but…

So the CDC, which gets billions, if not tens of billions of taxpayer dollars, is basically saying “don’t look at us, we just work here”?

Fuck those guys. Seriously. I thought they were the good guys.

The invisible hand will catch us!

Bear in mind the guy talking, Redfield, is a Trump appointee. I’m sure most CDC employees are working diligently to do what they can.

Welp. Just got the orders from the CEO to work from home Wednesday and Thursday (everyone without critical operational roles), so I can quit speculating about whether to do that without orders. Wonder if that means the company has gotten its first case. In any case, I’m happy to work for a company that is taking this seriously - way stricter than the government is mandating. But at least the latter finally came out with a recommendation against arrangements with >500 people. Only needed to see the exponential growth curve begin (from 173 two days ago, to 227 to 374 today) for the to finally realize that they have to do that.

Just hope it’s not too late.

I sent exactly that to my workplace’s Covid-19 task force to see if they can offer any clarification. If they get back to me I’ll post the response here.

WaPo is reporting that the WH is likely to seek federal aid for oil shale companies hit by the oil price drop and coronavirus-related market drop.

The message has been confusing. A lot of peopel still think “is just he flu”. Maybe they want to believe that, but they has ben told that.

Socialism is cool when it’s for oil companies.

Nope, I stand corrected.

Yeah, I watched it, but it felt like he said, yeah kids spread this, but don’t worry about it. Maybe if he’d said it’s going to spread regardless, so don’t increase the burden on medical staff, then sure.

Also: he does not sound like he’s talking about droplets. Listen around 11:30 where he talks about a 100 people in a room sharing air and cruise ships recirculating air.

King County (Seattle) just reported 74 new cases, bringing the total to 190.

My company’s policy as of today is everyone can WFH if they wish, and those displaying symptoms of sickness must WFH. (We are in Los Angeles.)

I sincerely do not think that any person other than those wanting to be pendantic are going to confuse what this guy is saying with the notion that you can somehow catch Covid 19 by just breathing the air in your own home with no one else around.

Sometimes some of you guys work too hard to be clever or pedantic. What the guy is saying is pretty clear. It doesn’t have to land on a surface that you touch and then you touch your face. He is saying the evidence shows that you can get it from breathing in airborne droplets expelled from someone who is infected.

I see nothing wrong with him saying that, if the evidence shows it to be true or even likely.

Oh, fuck

Public Health confirms 10 nursing homes with coronavirus on Tuesday

Public Health — Seattle & King County confirmed Tuesday that is working with 10 nursing-home facilities where residents or employees have tested positive: Life Care Center, Issaquah Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, Emerald Heights, Aegis Living at Marymoor, Redmond Care & Rehabilitation Center, Ida Culver House Ravenna, Boulevard Park Place Active Retirement Community, Madison House Independent & Assisted Living Community, The Gardens at Juanita Bay (Kirkland), Columbia Lutheran Home.

In addition, the public health agency reported 74 new coronavirus cases today, bringing the total for King County to 190.

Two new deaths were reported, making a total of 22 coronavirus fatalities in the county. Of those, 19 have been associated with Life Care Center in Kirkland.

“We’re going to see increasing cases for the forseeable future. It will not be unusual for us to see a doubling of cases on a weekly basis, if not even more frequently,” said Patty Hayes, director of Public Health Seattle & King County. “I’m assuming that we have it occurring low-level throughout the county.”

Hayes stressed that 80% of people who have the virus will experience only mild symptoms.

Yeah, I wasn’t mass-panicking or anything. This anecdote seems fairly measured to me but it seems basically interchangeable with the common cold or other strains of flu in terms of ease of transmission.

I work IT in a Spanish University. We have a single case in our ~150k pop city, about 4 within 100 Km. A couple hours ago we were quietly told to beef up the online learning systems ASAP, so I guess we are closing soon. I agree some of the places that closed today could and should have done it a couple of days earlier.
Until today I felt no one really was really concerned around me, today I noticed some changes but still most people need to get to grips with what’s happening and what’s going to happen.

You know what I’m thinking as I write? We could do with the King in military uniform on every TV station telling people to stay the fuck at home. Most Spaniards still remember that the King in khaki on TV means serious shit.

Right, because we’re not talking about the public that’s putting neosporin on their nose, stockpiling enough rice to last them years, assuming the bugs don’t get it, freaking out over TP and, my favorite, running around feeling safe with masks that are not on correctly at all.

It has nothing to do with people trying to be clever.
