Oregon Governor and associated mayors / health dept folks got on this morning for 9am announcement - suspending any gatherings of > 250 ppl, which was expected.
In followup Q&A, they admitted the state can only do about 80 tests a day right now and are estimating hundreds of infections instead of the 21 being officially reported. They are relying on hospitals & private physicians to do bulk of testing. Yeah, right.
We really have no data as a country. The leadership is freaking out because they know we don’t have enough testing going on so they are truly blind to the infection rate.
Well, a big party on my island has been cancelled, due to fears over having so many people in one place.
Stupidly though, accomodation is not being cancelled, because people have paid loads of money for this.
So, instead of a crowd of people in a controlled situation with lots of police (from experience, the spanish authorities are very very good at policing these carnival events,) there will be be smaller crowds of people wandering the streets lost with nothing to do, and no police presence.
Apart from that, no one is doing anything here.
No panicking, no stockpiling, no curfew etc.
Apart from one friend who has decided to self isolate :S.
I wonder if maybe I should stockpile :D.

He tries to grab her by the crotch, but she warns him that if too many people get Covid-19, he won’t get re-elected. So, he orders the CDC not to let anyone get tested. If they aren’t diagnosed, they aren’t sick, right?
As a result, far more people get sick than needed to.
How many people have to die to get the man out of office?

It’s not so much a “they” as it is a “Trump” (/P&R). If what Banzai said about the crazy difficulty in meeting the criteria for getting tested is the norm, that is appalling.

UK government conference was interesting. Johnson let the Chief Science Advisor and Chief Medical Officer do the main explanations for why they havent gone full Italy/Ireland or even matched Scotland which is wiser than him babbling on.
It did kinda make sense, nothing is going to stop it, the peak is 10 days off, and we need to have the harshest measures then but many will disagree no doubt…
- if you have it stay at home for 7 days
- nothing is being shut
- old people dont go on cruises
- high risk stay away from people
- wash your hands

The problem isn’t financial policy. The problem is that everything is literally shutting down, and in a best-case scenario, thousands and thousands of businesses are going to close and millions of people will lose their jobs.
True, but this shouldn’t be a direct campaign speech. He could say, “I’ve spoken with experts and these are the thing that need to be done immediately.”
Won’t make them happen, but could exert pressure. Looking “presidential” and helping to steer the ship which has no rudder could save lives and have the benefit of getting him elected
Yes. The “Let’s move some financial levers” isn’t going to fix things, and is probably making things worse by failing to address any of the root causes.
Either such advice is going to be the same thing already given by the CDC…or if it’s contradictory, it’s going to confuse people and really be a mess.

Norwegian Cruise Line managers urged their sales teams to share false information about the novel coronavirus to help land bookings with potential customers, including that the virus can’t affect people in “tropical temperatures,” leaked emails from a company whistleblower show.
Employees were also urged to tell customers that scientists and “medical professionals have confirmed that the warm weather of the spring will be the end of the Coronavirus,” the emails show.
It’s already a mess. But I mean he could say what the current administration should be doing, not advice to individuals. Like saying we need to ease testing restrictions and free up private labs to help, etc.
