He pretty much did. They have recommendations from the experts they consulted that they’re sharing.
Again, he can’t really do much. He’s technically not even the Democrat nominee yet. He’s just a candidate.
Regardless, he sounded and acted about a bajillion times better on this subject than Trump.
No one in their right mind interpreted that advice as if you wash your hands and refrain from touching your face you are certain to remain uninfected.
There’s probably a hundred threads in the last few years where we all used the word Idiocracy over and over. Coronavirus is going to be the ultimate demonstration of Darwinism In Action
Today, I received an email offer from Norwegian to book a Mediterranean cruise with a sailing date in April. The cruise embarks from Athens, visits some islands, Istanbul, Haifa and returns to Athens. Last time I checked, Israel was requiring mandatory quarantine for all arrivals, multiple airlines were canceling flights in and out of Athens, and for an American to go would require quarantine on return to the US. But they are still trying to sell a week in a Petri dish of potentially infected people. They are insane.
No, I believe in the current parlance the epidemic death will be a test with… high sensitivity but low specifity.
.
The US has 150 toilet paper manufacturers. So ignore the shortage scares. Though my local Wegmans is now limiting people to one 30 roll pack per visit.
@Thrag was kind enough to msg me the twitter link to the person who was doing covid-19 infection curve matching, and that person is still hard at work. This is some early days plotting/data gathering, AND it’s twitter, so…go to costco and buy that pillar of salt you need to follow this up, but if true it would be a ray of hope.

Some more snippets from the UK press conference:
- Probably between 5,000 and 10,000 people with COVID-19 in UK [at the moment]
- UK is on a trajectory that is about 4 weeks behind Italy
- Worst case scenarios show 80% of population infected
- This is only the beginning of the curve…
Man oh man… I feel like I’m living in a movie
Here in suburban Boston, the TP aisle at the local grocery was literally overflowing with extra units yesterday. Looks like they stocked up for a rush that never materialized.
But hand sanitizer or hand soap? Almost sold out.
It’s disturbingly refreshing to see / hear from somebody remotely competent!
Which makes me consider what we could do (if anything) about the current disastrous leadership.
On the one hand you’d wish the cabinet would agree that Trump’s continued inaction & wrongheaded policies prove that he is effectively mentally incapacitated, a clear danger to the republic & needs to be removed. But otoh the administration has been so hollowed out by sycophants, gangsters, and morons over the last 3+ years that you know nobody would consider it & it’s unknown if Pence would be much better anyways.
And then there’s also the long term concern that such a near coup would permanently undermine and unbalance our democracy.
So I guess we’re stuck with the idiot unless / until he dies ?!

I’m starting to get a Counterpart déjà vu
I mean it’s been clear we’re living in an alternate universe for years now.
Cuomo (New York):
We are taking new actions to reduce the density of people across the state.
Starting Friday at 5pm, gatherings with 500 people or more will not be permitted in NYS.
Additionally, for facilities with an occupancy of 500 or fewer, we are reducing the legal capacity by 50%.
[Schools + subways exempt apparently]
Why are people so dumb?
At this time 75 years ago some 70k US Marines landed on two Jima over a 36 day period. During that time approximately 7,000 were killed and another 19k were wounded. Given what they endured we can get through this
That’s an email some idiot managing director at my company sent out to a bunch of people.
So, I would really prefer not to dump on Boris, because at least he seems to be listening to the experts somewhat (unlike the orange buffoon), but there are so many things about this that makes absolutely no sense to me.
Norway has a much higher infection rate per capita than the UK (although I suspect a significant part of that is simply that Norway has tested more per capita than the UK has). Norway has 700+ infected, the UK has ~500 (but also 8 dead, Norway had its first death this evening). The estimate before the recent draconian measures was that the peak would hit us in June-August. Even accepting that this is just guesswork, the assumption that the peak is just 10 days off makes absolutely no sense to me. I’d love to see what models they base that assumption on.
Even so, if they really think the peak is close, it makes absolutely no sense to not institute draconian measures now. The evidence suggests that they work, can save thousands of lives, and every day counts. You want to prevent the peak, not shrug and say “can’t do anything about it”.
Staying home for 7 days is really, really irresponsible. Every other advisory I’ve seen recommends 14 days of quarantine, and at least 7 days after the last symptoms.
No one is going on cruises, so I’m not sure what that is supposed to contribute. Both in Denmark and Norway they advise people to protect the elderly by keeping kids away from them, and limiting contact (homes for the elderly have visitation restrictions). At a minimum, they should be making such recommendations.
Sorry to say it, but I don’t think this ends well, at all.
I can’t speak for anyone else, but around here the push I heard for toilet paper was from people urging friends to stock up on “everything” they’d need if they had to basically stay home for a month.
The advice was have a lot of food, of course, but don’t forget about other household consumables like toilet paper.
I don’t know why people latched on to the toilet paper part so specifically—are grocers also wiped out of rice and canned goods? I just assume it’s the social media game of telephone that got us to this point.
A specific portion of theoretically good advice for a situation we’re not actually facing turned into what got retweeted and shared on timelines and here we are.
But that’s all just my theory, I have nothing to back that up. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Testing should be free, as in covered by the federal government. Federal government should be charged at or below costs. No profits to be made by anyone. Just get it done.
