It’s because the GOP has switched from a strategy of containment to one of mitigation. Not of the virus of course, but of the blame. Part of that strategy is to make sure that anything that might cause democrats to be given credit for anything positive must be shut down before it spreads.

No - I’m criticizing a strategy chosen by the UK which differs markedly from the science-driven strategies chosen by every other country in Europe.
As Scott said earlier - something can sound reasonable, and still be completely wrong. And in this case, I disagree that it even sounds reasonable. All the evidence that we have suggests that the UK approach (do nothing) leads to healthcare chaos and large numbers of dead people. And all the evidence we’ve seen so far - and every scientific expert I’ve read - suggests that lockdowns help to slow down and contain the spread. Does that mean that lockdowns is 100% certain to be the right strategy? Absolutely not - but when if 19 scientists say one thing, and one scientist disagrees, then the scientific conclusion is to assume that the sole scientist is wrong, unless he has solid proof to back up his assertions.
Slovenia and France have just announced the closing of schools all across the country, following the lead of most other European countries. I suspect Germany (which already has some closures) and the rest of Europe will follow by the end of this week.
