My institute had another great infectious disease meeting today. First half of the meeting is an infectious disease researcher who worked with the WHO and was on the ground for the SARS epidemic. Second half talks more about the current covid-19 crisis and answers a lot of questions from the (virtual) audience.
It was super informative, and worth a watch/listen.

I’m sure DJT/ Stephen Miller will use it as an opportunity to blame Obama, never mind the fact that DJT has cut funding every year to agencies who prepare and deal with virus pandemics.
And of course, he will proclaim that he is the one who will ‘cut through the red tape’, and solve the problem. And the MAGA crowd will eat it up. Unfortunately for the MAGAs, DJT has finally had something drop in his lap that he can’t bullshit away.

I can - The virus spread at a rate that was far higher than predicted - The highest in the scandinavian countries at that point. Primarily since we had a lot of people who had just been on ski vacations in austria and various other hot outbreak areas.
This led to an accelleration that would overcome the danish health system, strong as it is - Thus, the rather strong containment decrees were issues, to halt the spread, and make it take longer, thus giving our healthcare professionels the time needed to take care of it.
Now - all schools are closed for 14 days, most government emplyoyed sent home, bars and night clubs are closed and a lot of private businesses are either closing, or installing WFH measures. This is to curb the steep infection rate. Nothing more - we will still get just as many infected, but just spread out over time.

I’ve been looking and i haven’t seen a word from the Texas governor’s office.
I’m sure, being the frontline troops of the GOP, they’re not sure what to say - after all Fox said it’s a hoax until about 24 hours ago. They’ll probably do or say nothing and let cities make all the decisions themselves.
But tbh since they’re basically Trumpist footpads, they’ll happily get in line once Trump himself declare it to be an emergency later today. I’d expect Texas to make an announcement shortly thereafter, as well as many other GOP Governor led states that have been otherwise radio silent or radio stupid.

BTW, if you want a bit of an idea for a timetable on sports: the Chinese professional basketball league suspended play 6 weeks ago. They’re now in a 2 week training period and will resume play 8 weeks after postponements began.
