One of the upsides to this in the US is the recognition of how silly regs prevent health care professionals from responding to medical emergencies. Doctors in KY can’t go practice in CA due to state licensing laws. I’m hopeful that more governors like Baker/Polis waive these regs and boost telehealth. Key to allow providers to meet demand where it’s needed. Telehealth could be key to reaching seniors who should be avoiding in person visits.

Oh one hand, it makes sense to start asking retired health care workers to volunteer for duty.

On the other hand, they’re also in the prime risk demographic for the virus.

The volunteers are literally putting their lives on the line.

At this point, I wonder if the UKs plan is simply to do the opposite of what ever Europe is doing. They live, we die, thats winning Brexiter style for sure. Why in the fuck would we not involve ourselves in this?

Italy just posted their numbers for the day, 2500 new cases, 250 new dead.

I live in the South, and it was really surprising just how many people were convinced COVID-19 was a Liberal hoax. At the same time, though, I noticed that hand sanitizer, bleach, toilet paper, etc., were quietly getting harder to find (I stocked up weeks ago). But once my state published their first case the flood gates opened and the grocery stores have been going full tilt ever since. Just make sure you’ve stocked up before that first case gets announced.

It’s also gone from “Dem. hoax” to “China Bioweapon” pretty quickly down here in Mississippi. I’m sure it’ll eventually devolve to “Hillary’s Emails” at some point…

My sister, a doctor in California, shared this with us her family of upbringing; haven’t gone through it all, yet, but it looks helpful.

-1.5 million deaths expected in the US over the next 12 - 18 months
-People over 60 should stay home unless absolutely critical

I’m not saying it is shenanigans in this case. I’m saying it will look like shenanigans if/when more states do it.

Norwegian government generally recommends against travelling abroad at the moment. Today they specifically included France and USA on the list of countries that it is inadvisable to travel to in the current situation due to Corona.

I guess that they are basically concluding that the infected numbers in the US are way of base. Norway and Denmark with ~1600 known infected between them have 1 corona fatality. The US with 1200 registered infected has 40. The numbers in the states should probably be closer to 4-5000 registered at this point if the test regime was actually working.

Well, China dragged it’s feet for months, nearly half a year, with SARS. At least 6 weeks of official cover-up with COVID19. But yes, they do move quickly once they decide.

To the comment that such actions are impossible in the US, I would point out that most Americans thought any type of outbreak was impossible one week ago. A containment zone like in New Rochelle was impossible. Closing all schools at the state level was impossible. And we’re just at the start of the policy response curve, which in China also tracked with the severity of the outbreak.

I’m not saying we’ll do exactly what China did. But I wouldn’t underestimate the degree to which state or local authorities will use the powers they have, despite not having ever used them before in living memory.

Norway certainly seems to have a very low death rate and yet it’s the second worst country in cases per million. Certainly it seems testing is extensive and catching most cases, otherwise it’s hard to explain.

It’s because a number of countries are getting new cases with travel history from the USA. America is becoming a vector of transmission just like Italy.

But our numbers are going down to zero.

Italy just passed china in number of active cases

I’d have to agree. The same people that were loudly proclaiming it to be a hoax will be the first to start screaming “LOCK IT DOWN” when dear ol’ granny dies.

A disaster isn’t really a disaster until it happens in your backyard…

WHO declares that Europe is the epicenter of pandemic now, not Asia. Good luck Euros in the next few weeks. (especially for Italy which is going to have some horrific death numbers in next 10 days)

Eh, I’m out of fucks currently. And I believe that even if there’s a God, he doesn’t care one way or the other what I wish for, it’s all about personal catharsis.
On the other hand, obsessing over it isn’t going to do any good, but I don’t think that’s what’s happening.

My job (Ohio-based) has asked everyone to work from home if they can. At my son’s job (just outside of DC), he was just told “Shit’s about to hit the fan,” and a door closed to a meeting room.

I just watched the Katie Porter video. Bless that woman.
