Coronavirus 2019

I actually thought the mortality rate was way higher than that. So that’s something, at least.

This mentions updates on specific countries as well questions about sanitation on planes, cruise ships and and travel insurance.

I suspect it’s much, much lower, actually, given what we know about how this spreads/infects. I wouldn’t be surprised if there is a huge number of people who run around infecting others, feel poorly for a few days themselves (wondering if they should turn themselves in), and then recover with no one the wiser about whether they’ve had the virus.

“Globally, we will not be able to contain the spread of this virus. We can slow it down, but we can’t stop it,” said Dr. Allison McGeer, an infectious diseases specialist at Toronto’s Mount Sinai Hospital who worked on the front lines of the SARS epidemic in 2003.

People from my old workplace(Tourism site) are quarantined as of yesterday after a group from South Korea visited the place. Two weeks ago!

When the Koreans went back to their country one or two of them were diagnosed with the virus. Now everybody is tracing back their trip in the country, they quarantined an entire class on a school field trip to another site in the same time as the koreans when a teacher came down with a fever.

Meanwhile, two weeks have passed without noticing and if it’s spreading… We are headed for interesting times.

That new cases cant be traced to anyone from China is the latest concern

This is really not a surprise since it communicates like the common cold and people are infectious before they develop serious symptoms.

There is not, imho, any question of containment anymore. Now it is mitigation and management.

Everything about this is very complex. The detector kits hare a rate of success of 30% and we are releasing people from quarantines for being “clean”. We have asyntomatic spreaders. And theres the suspicions we don’t know all the ways it spreads.

Also I just read World War Z last week, so some random disease not being contained by China and spreading to the rest of the world while they try to pretend it’s not a big deal/they have it under control seems familiar.

South Korea has raised the alert level to red and enabled officials to take “emergency measures”

I gotta figure North Korea is totally screwed already

If you’re feeling unwell, please report to your nearest reeducation camp to learn this is the new healthy. All hail dear leader.

Italy went from 3 to 133 cases.

Everyone should be taking measures to be ready. Work from home. Hygiene habits. What to do if you are infected.
This is going to be part of our lives from now own.

Is that any different than any other day really?

I mean, I suspect typhus and parasites are deadlier for most of them.

For a disease this contagious, against a population which is already weakened from chronic malnutrition, i would expect to see bad things.

On the other hand, they have far far fewer international travelers to carry the virus in. I recall they were amongst the first to wholly close borders in January. Not an endorsement of NK, just noting that the main vector of country to country transmission (international travel) isn’t much of a issue for them…

I dunno, sharing a burner with the country where the thing started makes me think at least one got over the border… and once one does, in a place like that, it’s gonna spread fast.

Yeah, looks like they executed a public official who violated quarantine after coming back from China.

We’re pretty close to past the point where closing the borders makes any difference.

But the P word alone won’t help the public understand what’s about to change: the end of most quarantines, travel restrictions, contact tracing, and other measures designed to keep “them” from infecting “us,” and the switch to measures like canceling mass events designed to keep us from infecting each other.

We are past that point
