Started when I showed the viral Viet song/video/dance and they ranted how communist mainland China made them change the lyrics from something referencing Wuhan. Their “evidence” is that communist mainland China is giving money to the WHO head, causing him to delay calling things a pandemic. As well as no longer referring to it as the “Wuhan Virus” because I dunno, modern science practices like not naming storms after vengeful women seems plausible along with not stigmatizing a place by naming a disease after it.

N95s need special fabric, and would need action from 3M (if nothing else to open up more subcontractors). Surgical masks, which are also in short supply, can be made and are being made by Foxconn and BYD and the like.

It would be very, very good if all incoming patients at hospitals were given surgical masks on arrival, to protect the HCW.

Wow, shit’s hitting the fan faster than I thought. MGM Resorts is shutting down all operations at all their Strip locations - That’s Mirage, MGM Grand, NYNY, Luxor, Mandalay Bay, Park MGM (formerly Monte Carlo), Aria, Vdara, Bellagio, and Excalibur. Wynn Resorts is following suit, closing the Wynn and Encore for two weeks. No word on any others, yet, but MGM owns like half the Strip, so I’m sure the other properties will be following suit shortly.

This is pretty major for Vegas. Last time I remember a casino having to close its floor suddenly was MGM Grand following Tyson-Holyfield II (the Bite Fight), when a huge brawl broke out, turning over gaming tables and whatnot. That was only like a 90 minute stoppage, and it was a big deal.

Not sure how many people total this will affect, but there’s about 60,000 workers in the culinary union, so yikes. Additionally, a lot of our (as well as hundreds of other companies) employees work in the resort retail areas, wedding chapels, and nightclubs, so they’re all out of work. Curious to see if our owner offers any worker protections for all our employees.

Gov. Sisolak also closed all NV schools until mid-April today as well.

I talk to my mom about Covid-19. And she keeps saying that this is just like the flu, and people (including me) are overreacting, that we will be fine. So it was like talking to a brick wall when I ask her to keep social distance and wash her hands regularly.

I wonder if it is because I could easily imagine this getting much much worse. I played The Division 1. In the northern end of the Dark Zone (effectively the quarantine zone), there is a mountain of dead bodies. So many they just left them in the corner and pile up to 2-3 stories high. Granted, that was caused by a genetically modified flu-small pox virus in the game, so it is fiction. but given that they are digging mass graves in Iran, I can imagine it getting that worse if we are complacent.

That dude from WHO telling us to get serious about this, he sounds like an expert because he IS an expert, and the expert advice is to take it very seriously. It is not even “better safe than sorry”, it is “this is here now and we need to deal with it or you will see people dying left and right”. And then there are people just a week ago saying that this is fine. People are dying “over there” and not “here”.
