Fuck those people, that made my blood boil. Hang 'em from a lamppost as far as I’m concerned. Discourage work when there’s no jobs? Discourage growth when the bottom is going to fall out of the economy, a huge chunk of the working population is going to fail to make rent/mortgage and the chain reaction that is going to cause? Yeah. Even if a month of isolation knocks the active infections down, the only way forward from that would seem to be super massive testing and tracing while under somewhat relaxed isolation. Or multiple waves one after another I guess.
Kush may well be more incompetent than DJT, which is very, very hard to believe. I have to admit, it’s been getting easier.

Given the economic damage I don’t think any western country will fuck around again. We’ll do a China at the very first sign of another outbreak.
What happens in China the coming couple of month as they take down the lockdown is goping to be crucial to see where we are heading.

Yep, that’s exactly what’s discussed in the Imperial College paper (they are the academics providing modelling advice on the disease in UK) I linked to earlier:
The major challenge of suppression is that this type of intensive intervention package – or something equivalently effective at reducing transmission – will need to be maintained until a vaccine becomes available (potentially 18 months or more) – given that we predict that transmission will quickly rebound if interventions are relaxed. We show that intermittent social distancing – triggered by trends in disease surveillance – may allow interventions to be relaxed temporarily in relative short time windows, but measures will need to be reintroduced if or when case numbers rebound. Last, while experience in China and now South Korea show that suppression is possible in the short term, it remains to be seen whether it is possible long-term, and whether the social and economic costs of the interventions adopted thus far can be reduced.

We lost our edge when the Soviet Union fell. Little did we know that was also the downfall of the United States. Without the specter of communism, the oligarchy had no reason to invest in our country. That’s when we started ignoring experts, that’s when we stopped educating our children properly, that’s when News Entertainment started replacing journalism. That’s when we started letting the wealthy purchase legislators shamelessly, and later legalized the corruption in the Supreme Court.
Maybe this virus, if it kills a Trump or a Bezos or that other Koch Bro, will scare the ruling elite enough to buy us another 50 years of cooperation and collective work toward the improvement of the human race. What’s more likely is that some other country is going to take over as the innovative leader in the world. Maybe India? Who knows.
