Tried to order food online(bay area) just now. There was no deliveries available for the full week(max time to schedule) from 2 websites and multiple stores. Likewise, pickup was not available.
To me, this seems such a no-brainer - just go to delivery/pickup only. Driver would be safe. Packer would be safe. Customer would be safe. Plus they could hire people probably pretty easily and actually put a monitor on hoarding.
The COVID tracking project has recorded that 22,410 new tests were run in the last 24 hours in the US.
That’s a huge and significant ramp up. That’s good.
And the more tests that are run, the more cases that are going to be uncovered.
(Monday-Tuesday-Wednesday of this week, 49,400 new tests were conducted; that’s triple the number of tests that had been run up until Sunday, March 15.)
I imagine that civic authorities are worried that if they push things too hard in a clampdown they will do more harm than good. Especially in a society that has a (justifiable) distrust of police/authorities among the poor a hard police crackdown can lead to riots. Which would only make things worse.
Until the dead start piling up visibly I think a lot of Americans, especially ones that are a bit less informed by good news sources, are sort of resenting all the government actions to date.
Also worth noting that US population density is less than half 196 vs 84 people vs square mile. We have roughly 50% more space per person in our houses, and median population is 8 year younger, 15% of folks in the US are over 65 vs 22% in Italy. They have the highest percentage of adult men living with their parents of any country
I’m not sure how you measure this but cultural I think Italian are more physical, hugs and kisses, back slaps etc. But maybe that is just me watching too many movies.
