There really is a stark contrast watching other world leaders give their briefings compared to Trump.
The virus might go away in a week, it might not.
I gather that the paid sick leave bill that Trump just signed ended up only covering 20% of the people originally intended.
What is happening with the much larger stimulus bill? States’ unemployment insurance funds will not be able to handle this surge of claims, and low-income and gig workers are completely boned without an UBI-like solution, at least a couple thousand dollars of a cash infusion. We’re gonna see Depression-era levels of unemployment in the next few months otherwise.
I’m waiting for Trump to claim he invented the idea of social distancing.
With respect to the UK situation, one of my UK friends told me how his sister went to the local pub on St Patrick’s day for “one last night out” before things start closing down seriously. I was appalled.
I suspect people are completely blinded by the low number of registered cases in the UK. Whereas, IMO, the numbers people should be looking at are the hospitalized cases and fatalities. Currently, the UK is up at 137 dead. Only China, Italy, Iran, Spain, USA, and France have more dead from Covid-19 than the UK at this point.
The fact that people still have a net approval of Johnson’s and Whitty’s handling of this crisis is just insane to me. The death toll is going to blow way past 200 by the end of this week. By the end of next week, I fear UK will be the new Italy. Government intervention is way too little, far too late.
To put the UK numbers in context: March 13 (less than a week ago), Spain had registered 166 people dead from Covid-19 (+36). The days since have seen those numbers increase by daily tallies of 98, 48, 191, 105, and 165, with the death toll now past 800. If people have been out in bars celebrating St Pats in any kind of significant numbers, the UK could easily end up tracking much, much worse.
Please take care of yourselves and your loved ones, those of you over there.
Seeing Trump actually take this job seriously, even in 45 second spurts, is incredibly strange.
