Slice of my life today:

Went out today to buy food for the household for the first time since we were put on Shelter in Place restriction. It was about what I expected. I went to two grocery stores, a conventional american corporate store (safeway) and a conventional asian grocery store(ranch 99), going to the ranch 99 first at about 9:30am and the safeway about an hour later.

The asian market was the better choice. A lot fewer people. A lot more stock. Virtually all the shelves were full with only a few areas with lacking (fresh meat, in particular pork, was about 1/4 of normal capacity - they are about the best butcher in the area i live in and they always have good supply/quality of meat). They had no milk or eggs, however. Practically all of the staff were wearing masks.

The safeway was more crowded, but they weren’t controlling access and there was no line. People generally respected the 6 foot rule. I was wearing one of my masks I brought back from Hong Kong and i think people preferred to give me a wider berth than normal, but that was ok with me. They still had stock, but there were definitely shortages. Very few vegetables (particularly root vegetables), no deli(i found this odd), no chicken and very little meat of any sort. Pasta sauce and pasta was very limited (there was a pallet of one type of pasta out, but probably no more than 24 bottles of sauce in the store). I overheard a manager explaining to another customer that they had more stock, but lacked people to put it on the shelves and were still reeling from the demand in the first day in particular(tuesday). None of the staff were wearing masks, and there was no hand sanitizer to be seen.

Both places had a full supply of alcohol. I’m not sure what to make of that

People(customers/staff) were calm and polite in both places, though perhaps a little more rushed in the safeway. I might even say people were friendlier than normal - but maybe i’m projecting a bit.
