Eh, we are taking some pretty massive urgent actions.
All these scenarios of million of people dying involve us just doing things like normal.
But we aren’t doing things like normal.
Entire States are shut down.

Florida is going to kill us all though.
That’s the problem with how we’re doing it. Every state can do everything perfectly and if one state doesn’t you’re probably screwed anyway.

Seriously. Just one kid coming home from spring break will reset the quarantine clock in California and New York, for example.
I wish they could stop anyone from Florida from entering the state at this point.

Reynolds has asked people coming back from Spring Break to self-quarantine.
But they’re people who went to Florida during Spring Break.
So… they’re not going to because they went to fucking Florida during a pandemic.
I think this assumes pretty overwhelming compliance with recommendations that are effectively voluntary. Once heavy fines start to come out for Sunday morning jogs, then I’ll start the 2-3 week clock on when US infections will peak.

Let’s see if this link was posted already.
It’s short, sweet, and should come with a trigger warning.

My CEO (an MD) is on videoconference with a bunch of us now. Her college-age daughter is home and was promptly quarantined in her bedroom. When she wants something, she asks for it via text. She’s apparently not happy about it, but she was not given a choice.

Potentially bad news pertaining to the cost of testing. From Castlight Health:
Although the coronavirus relief measures signed by the President in the Families First Coronavirus Response Act have directed private health plans to waive the cost of the specific coronavirus test and visit associated with it, people who are symptomatic and seek care may be responsible for other costs required for an evaluation for COVID-19. These could include influenza testing, chest x-rays, and bacterial, viral, or blood culture tests.
Here’s an example from the report:
For example, a patient in Seattle exhibiting a fever and a cough with no chest pain who goes to a primary care doctor for an evaluation can expect an average cost of $197. But if the symptoms include a high fever, cough, chest discomfort, and shortness of breath, the primary care provider will likely order lab tests and a chest x-ray, increasing the cost of a primary care evaluation to an average of $1001 in this metro area.

Wich is why we have given up on containment. It’s all about mitigation, give our people time until we can fight back. Protect yourself and do what you can to avoid getting sick. It’s going to be hard, and long.
Ask them how many members of their family they’re willing to roll the dice for.
You’re willing to put a revolver to your head and pull the trigger. And your wife, and your kids. Does 20% seem so low now?
I would not characterize our actions as either massive or urgent. We’re taking the least possible action for as long as we think we can get away with it, which it doesn’t seem likely to work for much longer. We’re like 7 days away from cases just exploding.

Actually not an overreaction IMO. I actually see a lot of college students ask about how to do this on a discord, worried about their parents.

I agree with this. People just really don’t get the practical effect of statistics. I had someone tell me in response to Coronavirus that they “take a risk every time they drive their car.”
Like yeah, you do, but it’s not really a comparable thing.
Oh, I don’t think it’s an overreaction at all! I meant it to be cheering, that someone is actually enforcing the necessary.

You can try this, but what’s probably happening with these deniers is their coping mechanism is preventing them from grasping the true nature of the problem. Facts and figures are not really going to help.
I mean think about what these people who are still saying “it’s no worse than the flu!” are really suggesting. They are saying that every single health expert in the world, including people who have dedicated their lives to the study of infectious diseases, and every politician who has put their states on lockdown, are wrong, but they are right.

20% and 0.9% (where that 0.9% is spread over your entire lifetime) are basically the same thing.

Right? I mean, I have an pretty much equal chance of having a turtle dropped on my head as getting Coronavirus.
