How are you managing that? Nowhere in my area has delivery slots available in the next three weeks.

This is infuriating. She’s my Governor and I’m glad she is, but this is WTF stupid. Maybe she just wants to Darwin them since the majority are over 60 and vastly trend Republican. No, this could cost a lot of innocent lives and is stupid. Get your church from tv. Evangelical churches around here are basically malls for shopping and arcades to draw in youth. They’ve got thier own version of Starbucks, it’s literally like the thing that made Jesus so angry in the synagogue.

Yet another reason to be thankful you don’t live in West Virginia:

And yes, Putin was dishonest and deceptive.

I posted this in the other thread but I found this podcast so good it needs to be in both threads.

Very interesting podcast with multiple doctors talking about their experiences treating patients right now, including someone in charge of multiple sites in NYC, and a researcher in Italy.

TLDR We really don’t know much!

I understand the reasoning, but do you think there’s a line? I haven’t seen any suggestions to socially distance yourself from your spouse or kids, and the argument could be applied to them just as much. A number of medical experts (not claiming they are the majority but some governments are currently listening to them) are currently arguing that schools should be kept open.

For instance, my AUS state’s health department answered a question which was “can I go to the gym?” and their answer was if you go in off-peak hours and wipe down equipment before/after it is not irresponsible to do so. Should we feel bad for going to the gym when it isn’t the government advice to avoid it?

I’m just trying to sort out where the line exactly is, as I am getting a slightly different message from ‘experts’ on the internet which are haranguing anyone found close to anyone else (not saying you are one of them) and at least some of the actual experts, the health departments, and so on.

It just boggles my mind how China was able to arrest this at 80k. A number of western jurisdictions are almost completely shutting down their economies, and yet we are still to expect being in the ‘infancy’ of the trajectory?

Yes. The post that @rmorton quoted (and which you quoted in your post as well), makes that very point. We should be socially distancing from our spouse and kids, but since that sort of thing is generally not practical outside police states like in China, governments don’t mandate that.

Sweden has one such. I think they are clearly in the wrong, for two reasons:

  • We still do not know enough about how Covid-19 spreads to determine whether children are a significant vector in spreading it. Countries closing down schools may very well be overcautious, but if they are wrong, children in those countries lose a few months of school. If they are right, they’ve probably saved tens of thousands of lives.
  • So far, it seems as if most countries are going to end up school anyway - it just looks to be a question of whether they are going to have kids being vector 2-4 weeks longer than everyone else.

The truth is that no one knows for sure. Those who recommend strict non-socialization are doing so out of an abundance of caution, because the situation in China indicates that it requires extreme measures to control Covid-19. Those who say “sure, go to the gym, but keep your distance” are either less cautious or possibly more realistically realizing that people will do so anyway in a Western democracy, so might as well just give them some good advice.

Don’t stare yourself blind on the number of registered infected - I’d say that the true number of people infected with this in China is closer to 1M than 100K. China took extreme measures to cut down transmission of the virus, and that was what worked - not the efficiency of their treatments or testing.

Didn’t see this linked before: https://www.globalhealthnow.org/2020-03/covid-19s-stop-gap-solution-until-vaccines-and-antivirals-are-ready

Johns Hopkins hoping to trial an antibody therapy based on unpublished work from China. The word “Solution” in the headline is just a teensy bit of an oversell. Still, interesting. Maybe hopeful.

I’m confident that your correct that number of cases is much higher, and probably that some of the deaths are miss characterized. (That happens every year in the US the range of flu deaths is typical 2x between high and low.). I will say if the number of cases is actually 1 million than the mortality rate is is in the .3-4% range and less outside Wuhan thats only 3x the flu. This is in a pretty poor country, that was battling a disease with no information. You’d think that the West could do better. Obviously, South Korea has done better.

Partly Amazon Subscribe and Save. We have had monthly orders of toilet paper, kitchen towels, wipes, pet supplies, … (Generally bulk stuff where we can save by buying the same things regularly) going on for a few years. Because those are regular and pre scheduled, they still come through.

For online shopping in general, it’s a struggle. My wife managed to grab a slot for yesterday about 10 days ago. One of the only ways to get a slot is to try after just midnight when new slots are released. It’s like trying to buy concert tickets. But the supermarkets are hiring and expanding their delivery capacity. So I’m going that will settle down over the coming weeks.

We currently have everything we need bar done vegetable and fruit for the next 2+ weeks.

And not a moment too soon. Because my wife is now self isolating for the week. The symptoms are mild, but close enough (low grade fever, a tiny bit of a dry cough) that she is taking no risks for others.

Only Italy so far has forbidden people to go to work, and did just yesterday. The previous lockdown (very intensive already) wasn’t working.

China closed everything very, very early.

Interesting how countries differ!

Am I a bad person for not only not caring too much, but actually, having a part of me, desire widescale chaos?

I mean, I know it’s not a good thing to think, but it seems to me that certain people “deserve” to get fucked.

Sadly, them getting fucked means alot of decent people will too. :(

Yeah that’s kind of fucked up, dude :)

Wow, just wow! Vote for the black guy!!!

Perhaps, but I am willing to bet there’s a part of every single one of us waiting for a bit of chaos.

edit:

I’m not totally a bad guy though.

I got a poem sent to me yesterday, which I like, which is unusual as I am not normally a poetry person:

Lockdown

Yes there is fear.
Yes there is isolation.
Yes there is panic buying.
Yes there is sickness.
Yes there is even death.
But,
They say that in Wuhan after so many years of noise
You can hear the birds again.
They say that after just a few weeks of quiet
The sky is no longer thick with fumes
But blue and grey and clear.
They say that in the streets of Assisi
People are singing to each other
across the empty squares,
keeping their windows open
so that those who are alone
may hear the sounds of family around them.
They say that a hotel in the West of Ireland
Is offering free meals and delivery to the housebound.
Today a young woman I know
is busy spreading fliers with her number
through the neighbourhood
So that the elders may have someone to call on.
Today Churches, Synagogues, Mosques and Temples
are preparing to welcome
and shelter the homeless, the sick, the weary
All over the world people are slowing down and reflecting
All over the world people are looking at their neighbours in a new way
All over the world people are waking up to a new reality
To how big we really are.
To how little control we really have.
To what really matters.
To Love.
So we pray and we remember that
Yes there is fear.
But there does not have to be hate.
Yes there is isolation.
But there does not have to be loneliness.
Yes there is panic buying.
But there does not have to be meanness.
Yes there is sickness.
But there does not have to be disease of the soul
Yes there is even death.
But there can always be a rebirth of love.
Wake to the choices you make as to how to live now.
Today, breathe.
Listen, behind the factory noises of your panic
The birds are singing again
The sky is clearing,
Spring is coming,
And we are always encompassed by Love.
Open the windows of your soul
And though you may not be able
to touch across the empty square,
Sing.

Oh I enjoy some chaos, just to shake things up. But honestly, after 3+ years of Chaotic Evil thanks to Trump, there is nothing in the world I want more than some stability, goodness, and just plan normality.
Nothing about Covid 19 is normal.
