I’d say more like 300 per day in a week.

CLAIM: Please be advised that within 48-72 hours the president will evoke what is called the Stafford Act. The president will order a two week mandatory quarantine for the nation. The National Guard will mobilize and martial law will go into effect. Stock up on whatever you need to make sure you have an adequate supply of everything.

THE FACTS: Screenshots of text messages are circulating in group chats and on social media warning that the U.S. will go into lockdown and that martial law will go into effect. The texts are often attributed to a friend of a friend or a relative who knows someone working in an official capacity for the U.S. government or a medical institution. They claim the government — sometimes federal, sometimes state or local — is about to put a quarantine in place and people won’t be allowed to leave their homes for weeks. The National Security Council knocked down the rumors on Twitter. “As we saw over the wkend, disinfo is being spread online about a supposed national lockdown and grounding flights. Be skeptical of rumors. Make sure you’re getting info from legitimate sources,” the council tweeted Thursday. The texts first emerged on a local level with messages saying that New York and Washington state would go under lockdown, with later claims suggesting that the whole nation would enforce a lockdown. President Donald Trump said at a briefing Friday that he has no plans for a national lockdown at this time. “I don’t think we’ll ever find that necessary,” he told reporters.

Not in any reasonable way. I was really meaning to ask the question. I’ll delete the comment.

Of course you won’t see anything on this in WHO information 🙁

Except it isn’t. If touch the outside of the mask and deposit the virus on it, then it’s just sitting there in front of your mouth on a moist surface. Not great.

Again - so very much this.

Surgical masks would be beneficial if everyone who uses one, would be smart about it. Use and dispose it responsible (i.e., no touching the mask and then touching other surfaces/yourself), etc., etc. And if everyone used it and kept social distancing.

The problem is that this is not what happens. As Nesrie says, people take on a surgical mask, and think that means they are protected, so now they can go back to doing everything they did before.

So yes - there is a small benefit from correct usage of masks - the problem is the huge malus because suddenly people think that social distancing is no longer necessary.

That is why the experts don’t recommend it for general usage, and probably wouldn’t do so, even if the supply was infinite. Social distancing is way more important than mask wearing.

US is ramping up testing like crazy, sadly I feel we are going to end up being #1 on the chart (confirmed cases) by the end of next week.

US does have the largest population out of the West so not surprising given the similar trajectories that everyone is taking.

See, this isn’t actually logically sound.

It implies that people are too stupid to use masks, but are smart enough to perform social distancing correctly.

Also, it ignores the fact that the virus can actually exist for hours in an aerosolized form. Someone can cough in an area, and you could just walk through it hours later. It doesn’t matter than no one is near you at the time.

Again, the point of most masks is not to protect the wearer.

They function as a containment for the viruses that come out of an infected person’s mouth. They also prevent an infected person from touching their face, transferring it to their hands, and then transferring it to other surfaces.

Ideally, you would just have the social distancing rules we have now, but also wear masks.

This also ignores that many people don’t respect social distancing recommendations. We don’t discard them entirely due to imperfect adherence. Don’t let the perfect be the enemy of the good.

Apparently those people aren’t real experts, and the real experts are here.

Can I politely ask that we please move the mask discussion to the other thread?

Ohio is moving to mandatory shelter in place starting at 11:59pm tomorrow. Exceptions seem to be the standard we’ve seen in other states.

And for those that haven’t noticed it yet, here’s a helpful link

Yep smart move, NJ, OH , I heard on the radio that PA will be announcing something later today or tomorrow, along the same lines.

Yes, this. Warren, and Porter.

Utah just had our first fatality an hour or so ago, at the hospital right by my house. Sad.

Angela Merkel’s doctor tested positive, so she’s in lockdown in Germany now. Apparently he gave her a routine vaccination on Friday.
