This is great. General in charge of the Army Corps of Engineers on how they can get emergency hospitals online rapidly. The competence and can-do attitude is reassuring.

Someone pointed out yesterday that Trump said, “The federal government isn’t a package shipper”.
And actually… that’s totally incorrect.
The US Military is the most competent, powerful logistics force in the world. Most of what the military does is exactly that… just shipping tons of stuff all over the planet.

I mean, the “mitigation” herd immunity strategy is awful, given our current understanding of the numbers, and should not be pursued, but it would probably increase GDP per capita over the short-medium term.
Generally I’d say that’s true, but if people quote e.g. the CDC’s view on the advisability of some behavior, I think it’s reasonable for laymen like us to believe it’s something of a consensus view. That isn’t to say it couldn’t be wrong, but it won’t be wrong because the doctors at the CDC failed to consider the possibility that an infected person touched the food along the way.
Also, isn’t the US Postal Service part of the federal government?

Hah, that’s a good point. Isn’t that the reason when you hear that there are 500,000 troops somewhere that really means about 100,000 actual soldiers in the field and the rest are doing logistics and management of those 100k?
If the economy and the stock market stays crashed for the next 4 months, he absolutely loses the election. If the economy starts to stabilize and maybe recover, but 50,000 extra cases die alone in ICUs in plastic wrap, he maybe can win.
Well, it was right there in my post:
Failing that, he could at least refuse to stand behind the President when he’s lying.
He seems to be sidelined while in the actual job. Why is that better than being sidelined for losing the job?
It is and it isn’t, sort of.
It’s a part of the Federal Government, but typically doesn’t get considered into the Federal Government apparatus and budget as often, because it operates as its own thing under the executive branch.
This was true in China as well initially. Deaths tend to happen faster than recoveries.

It seems milder cases aren’t really tracked at all in the “recovery” stats in most places. Extremely confusing.

Having once worked for a logistics software company that had the military as its major contract I facepalmed when I heard that. Moving men and material is exactly what our military does every day and it usually does an impressive job of it.

One of the most critical aspects of supporting any kind of fighting force, is the logistical chain necessary to keep them supplied and fed. The US military has taken this to a level that no one has ever achieved in the history of mankind. Our ability to get shit where it needs to be, anywhere, on a schedule, is unparalleled.
Trump just doesn’t understand any of this, because he’s dumb as shit.
AFAIK the recovery stat is for tested cases. So if you are tested positive, once you test negative you are recovered. It’s not for critical cases only, since those have 50% chances of recovery only.
China, for example, has only 5k active cases. Everybody else from the 81k either dies or recovered.
The issue with the current numbers is that recovery (testing negative) can take up to a month. Spain is just now having any significant number of recovered (as in the last two days). Since most other Western coutnries except Italy lag behind Spain for some days, it’s going to take a while until you start getting significant recoveries there.
Pick a topic and this statement applies.
Maybe if Rand Paul dies and some other GOP senator gets sick they’ll finally so something about our leadership crisis. If a Democrat dies they’ll just chortle and continue feasting on the poor like Skeksis.

Interesting factoid I learned yesterday…
Rand Paul actually had part of his lung removed due to that beating he took from his neighbor. So he’s potentially at increased risk from covid-19.
Which was interesting for the karma aspect, but also impressive that his neighbor gave him such an insanely extreme beating.

Can you imagine Rand Paul being your neighbor? Surprised it hasn’t happened more often!
He got beat up for spraying his lawnmower clippings into his neighbor’s yard. Hilarious.
