I would actually argue that calling it the Covid-19 virus takes valuable information from it. People should clearly not be travelling to the Wuhan region of China, and we should take extra precautions in tracking people coming from the Wuhan province.

Information is key here, why would you try to excise useful information? Just because of racists?

As I said I have no problem referring to it as Covid-19, but I don’t see a problem with Wuhan Virus either.

Uhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

How about here in the States we just refer to it as the “Seattle Virus”?

The disease was first identified in 1976, in two simultaneous outbreaks: one in Nzara (a town in South Sudan) and the other in Yambuku (Democratic Republic of the Congo), a village near the Ebola River from which the disease takes its name.

You are more likely to get it from Iran or Milan than Wuhan now, looking at daily numbers.

Maybe this isn’t a great time to lead a personal crusade on nomenclature based off your low information status?

Guap is such a great troll.

Hopefully Unfortunately, you can soon call it Trump Flu.

COVID19 is the disease people get from the virus. SARS-CoV2 is the virus.

Been there, done that.

I thought there was already a Trump flu: affluenza. That kid caught it a few years ago…

The simple way to refer to the (very much not Spanish) “Spanish Flu” is the 1918 Flu.

That would require people to actually remember history, and remember we’re talking about a population that can’t remember Japan was not an ally in WWII.

Thanks, that’s useful - had seen both.

Confirmed in the Cleveland area:

Biden and Sanders are both holding rallies in Cleveland tomorrow.

In case no one responded with this. I gotta head out for a bit and don’t have time to catch up on the thread completely.

Oh, so I guess douchebag Gaetz is not under self-quarantine (that’s him boarding air force 1)

They’ve already traveled through a few hotspots. That has to be nerve wracking.

If this list is representative of both now and as it spreads more: travel, cruise lines and visiting hospitals and retirement homes are not a wise choice right now…

I didn’t know that, so thanks for done learning me something today! :)

To answer your question, if something like Ebola was newly discovered and members of the xenophobic right were trying to call the Mexican Death after it had spread globally instead of it’s other commonly known name, then yes I’d politely ask if we could use the other non-loaded term.

Looks like Italy has added over 1600 new cases in 1 day.

Mexican Death sounds like a great name for a salsa or a hot sauce.
