I don’t know how well CDPR did in conveying that this is an alternate timeline future like the Fallout universe. I know because I’m super familiar with cyberpunk media thanks to the games and books. But for someone not as well-versed in the genre, I wonder how well the idea is communicated when they see crazy shit in-game like 80’s styled cars with future-tech greebly bits just jammed onto them.
You mean Cyberpunk isn’t about the real world?

They talk about the USSR, and the US dissolving in the 2000s or whatever, it’s fairly clear if you pay attention.

Yeah, it’s not really obvious that there’s more than 30 years of lore behind the whole thing and it takes a moment, or rather takes some paying attention to grasp the fact that it’s an alternate timeline. But I don’t think that’s a problem. I’d say they did a very decent job to make it accessible for people who didn’t know anything about the universe before.
There are countless things that bother me about the game, but story and lore wise I think it’s very solid.
Oh, the cars don’t bug me, and yeah, I picked up on the alt history stuff, though I haven’t played the PnP RPG. It’s essentially Bladerunner’s dystopian future, minus the actual Nexus units.

I have a question for people who have finished or at least gotten ~50% of the way through the main story. Spoiler tags so I don’t ruin anybody’s fun. I am unclear whether I’m experiencing a super-annoying bug, whether it’s supposed to be like this, or whether I have done things in a strange order that is causing undesirable behavior.
There’s a mission that takes place in a mall, and something happens that introduces a “glitchy” effect to your vision. That leads straight into another mission in which it seemed to make sense that I might still be glitching out, so i didn’t worry about it. But I finished that mission (Transmission) also, and the glitches haven’t gone away. Does the next mission in that quest chain remove the glitches? Have I not unlocked it yet because I was behind on the Takemura mission chain (which I hadn’t started yet)? I have a hard time believing that they want to make you play with fucked up video and a non-functional minimap for half the game, so what’s going on?
I have started now to be afraid that it IS a bug and it won’t go away, and I’ve been playing for like 3-4 hours since it started, and I don’t have a save from before it because I assumed for a while that it wasn’t a bug… Quitting and reloading didn’t change anything.
Any clarification would be appreciated.
If you are talking about the glitching that happens when the Relic malfunctions, those incidents are compartmentalized in that they occur, then go away, though deeper into the story the incidents can last longer.
But I suspect you are actually talking about bugs. I’ve had the UI elements over-write each other, the smart weapon “aiming” square stay superimposed on the screen after the weapon isn’t even equipped, and had my scanner become non-functional more than once. I’ve also had tech assault rifles refuse to fire if they mounted a scope.
The crafting economy is messed up and terrible. I can’t recommend anyone currently waste points on it unless you are level 50 or something.
I’ve had the bug where the glitching doesn’t go away until reload but no, you aren’t supposed to play any significant amount of the game with a glitching effect. If reloads aren’t fixing it that is not good.

That’s what I was afraid of.
Sorry about the length, here, but I want to make completely sure we’re understanding each other. Much more specific spoilers here:
So when you’re in the mall for the Walk The Line mission, I felt like things weren’t happening quite the way they’re supposed to. Instead of going to the van like I was supposed to, I thoroughly explored everything, and I encountered the jacked up boss Animal woman. Fought and killed her, but during the fight I got hacked by the NetWatch Agent. That started a more-or-less-constant red glitching across my screen and the minimap gets disrupted.
At that point, I hadn’t gone to the van yet, so I went to the van and got some dialog that was clearly supposed to come before the encounter with the Animal boss. Then it told me to go to the cinema to confront the Agent. I got an option after like 2 lines of dialog to “detain” him, I think? That killed him (so I didn’t hear anything he had to say about what was going on or what his offer was). Then I collapsed on the floor, still glitching out real bad.
Then I wake up, Johnny’s there, and I stand up and then run to confront the Voodoo Boys people about leaving me for dead (still glitching). That leads into the whole Cyberspace thing where you play through Johnny’s concert, and the sex scene, etc.
Anyway, I finished all that stuff, and the same glitching is still happening. And I played for like an hour after that, thinking that I just hadn’t hit the next mission where I get something to fix it, but it sounds like it’s bugged and this might continue the rest of the game… Bummer. Not sure whether I can/should power through the game like this or whether I should take a week off and start over or what.
It only happens during main and side quests, right? Never when running around doing gigs? That’s intentional.

Define “running around doing gigs”? It happens while I’m just out in the open world. And constantly. It’s not an occasional thing. And I’m not talking about the thing that pops up the “relic error detected!” message. There are no character animations associated with it or anything. Just the effect. And it started very specifically when I got hacked by the NetWatch agent toward the end of the Walk the Line mission. And then it just never stopped.

These threads move so fast–can someone direct me to the 1.04 tweak guide that yielded improved framerates for people?
Do you mean this one? Worked wonders for me.

Crafting’s a good way to make ammo. Beats having to schlep to a store for more. Too bad you only make 1 case at a time.

I’m playing on Normal and some fights are pretty brutal for me. The Mall fight was pretty hairy, I snuck and scooted maybe 15-20 times until I got that done AND I had the turrets on my side. One in the back didnt’t seem to like me tho. I took out Sasquatch pretty easy tho, fire from the Lizzy gun helped. A lot of my perks are in hacking not physical or guns tho, so that hurts.
I beelined for this on your recc and THANK YOU. This opens up my stealth approach options enormously and I’m really loving it.
It is, and it’s discussed in great detail in the most recent Crate & Crowbar podcast, where one of the hosts has a lot of history with the source material. Great podcast episode, overall, too; they talk a LOT more about themes than anything else.
There’s some similarly very strong discussion in the recent Waypoint podcast; Rob Zacny has some great thoughts about hits and misses in the storytelling and worldbuilding.
In other news, I’m totally loving this game. There’s some very good stealth setups in many of the side missions, and now that I’m level 10ish and my Street Cred is 15+, I’ve got enough points in enough fun things that I can DO a lot.
For anyone struggling with the first few hours of gameplay; I was there too, and was pretty frustrated with the stealth AND the gunplay, but once I got more abilities I got real satisfied.
I’ve got this cyberware that slows time for 2 seconds when dodging, so my combat loop now includes me dodging to the side, time going BOOJ, and lining up headshots and firing like mad.

I had that bug too, but saving/reloading fixed it.
Such an awesome game. The sidequests are a bit weak, but the main ones are amazing.
