I did most of the rest of Irithyl (there’s a staircase down that I haven’t checked out by a bonfire yet) and reached the Pontiff. This is going to be tough. For a start, the frame rate tanks while he’s attacking. Something to do with his fire sword I think (I had similar problems in Undead Settlement around the bonfires). At 10 frames/sec it’s kinda hard to stay alive. I may have to turn everything to low. This is a decent machine so not quite sure what’s going on, it’s usually 60 fps the rest of the time.
Anyway, despite that I haven’t really had much chance to figure him out yet. Dodging was working quite well, attacking less so, and I’m not really doing much damage either. Running to his fog gate is problematic because you end up with a lot of shit in tow, so I missed whether there were any jolly cooperation signs down.
Most definitely there are.
That was one of those fights I just didn’t want to bother with. I’m sure it’s a fun fight to master, and the lore stories about the Pontiff are badass, but by the time I got to him I didn’t want to deal.
I fought him a couple times by myself, then jolly’d up and burned him down.
Incidentally, when I spawned at the Yorshka bonfire, I noticed various signs on the ground saying “Attack ahead!” and pointing at a bunch of statues in the corner. So I did, and revealed a hunched traveler… who then promptly died. I assumed it was some nasty critter in disguise but its wheezing “Why…?” as it expired has me wondering what it was!

Jeez, if a message sign told you to jump off a bridge, would you do it?
Because one did, more or less, and I did it, and I died.
omg I totally missed this!
I did this in bloodborne and ended up in a pit of snakes : (

I love the message system. You can tell by the look which is FROM’s and which are players messages. FROM’s are meant to help you, players messages can be anything, attempts at humor, letting you know to be careful of something ahead or just somebody trolling you. The thing is there are messages telling you to do things that seem crazy that are actually beneficial, so you have to try them sometime.
Part of the Anri storyline.
Try finger, but hole!
I pretty much always read messages, unless it’s directly behind a hollow draped over a railing in which case I know what it likely says! Most of them are really helpful (“Be wary of ambush” never lets me down). In this case there were three, all saying pretty much the same thing. And yes, I’ve seen “Try jumping” next to a bottomless ravine. I assume they’re put there by the same players who write “Illusion ahead” at walls that most definitely are not illusions.
As for this one, I have no idea whether I did the right thing or not. I mean, who can tell? :) I did meet Anri in that room earlier, but fortunately she didn’t ask me about Horace! Um… about that…
This is possibly the most Dark Souls screenshot I have ever taken.
Well, five attempts later… still can’t kill him! Last time I took in two NPC phantoms, got him down to a similar level before I died. Haven’t seen a human phantom sign yet. I’ve used up all my gold pine resins and I’m down quite a few embers, so back to Firelink.
The only upside is I’ve become pretty good at killing those frost knights on the way there. Two of those on each run.
Incidentally, there’s one move he does where he picks up an NPC phantom and squeezes it for a while, during which time he’s invulnerable! Just doesn’t seem like cricket. I’m thinking of going back to Longsword with him; much as I like the Greatsword, it’s too slow against him I think, and I barely get a hit in on that clone before it teleports.
I’ve got some life stuff happening for the next week, so I might not get much DS3 time in. No doubt I will forget how to fight this dude entirely.
Actually it’s the Astora Straight Sword, but it’s got quite a swing on it.
Yep, got him first time with the Longsword. :o
Hell yeah! Solid achievement to mark before stepping away for a bit. Post-pontiff is really the second half the game anyway, so you’re taking a break at a good point.
I had a quick look anyway, because why not? :) Naturally I got invaded pretty quickly, got him down to half health but a bit too laggy to really be effective. Went around a few corners, found an area that looked like I was playing Doom against fireball-throwing imps, found a shortcut back to the bonfire, called it quits.
You stopped right before the best ah-ha moment of the game ; )
I’m so jealous right now. I haven’t found the opportunity to play games during the last 3 days. I’m hoping tonight though.

So if you haven’t fought the Dancer I have one word for you.
Lightening.
I should turn my monitor brightness up?
