I’ve probably already said this up thread somewhere, but Dark Souls 3 contains allusions to not only Dark Souls 1 and 2, but Demon’s Souls and Bloodborne.

It is a From Soft Soulsborne greatest hits compilation. I don’t actually think this is necessary a good thing. Too on the nose as I have played every relevant From game in chronologically order thoroughly. The transition from Demon’s Souls to Dark Souls to Bloodborne feels about right with each gaming feeling distinct with just enough callbacks, but Dark Souls 3 is…too much?

Greatest hits compilation implies the game is just a collection of stuff from previous games, and I didn’t have that experience.

And the story of the game, while it plays with themes and elements from previous games, mainly focuses on a cast of new characters unique to DS3.

The rise of Pontiff Sulyvahn, the corruption of Aldrich, the tragedy of Yhorm, the drama of Lothric Castle, and the whole conceit of the Lords of Cinder, feel like wonderful new additions to the universe of Dark Souls.

Not to mention the truth behind Gwyn’s first born! Good stuff.

You should, uhhh, look around again.

Yes, you have definitely visiting the area already that has the vendor. You might even call it a settlement.

Well, I explored that area as thoroughly as I could, and even went back and explored everything that I didn’t the first time.

So time to look it up.

Oh wow. So you have to fall down a ledge. And there’s even a bonfire down there that I didn’t find. Interesting. I never would have found that without looking it up.

I think I saw the guys patrolling down there and decided to take a look, or maybe I was taking refuge from the firebombs. I can’t recall. I didn’t look it up, though!

I got to him from a slightly different route, dropping down from a higher roof; I think I had to leap across. I wondered if there might have been an easier way to access him (there was!).

That was the bonfire I used when making my multiple runs to the tree boss.

By the way, for the Abyss Watchers, there’s a couple of player messages that say to try lightning. So on my last attempt yesterday, I used one of the lightning items during the fight, and I was really happy to see that it gets added almost instantly, and even gets added on top of my Great Magic Weapon spell, so it stacks.

So when I died, I went gathered a few more Souls and went back to Firelink to buy some more of that sweet sweet lightning resin to put on my weapon. Sadly, the vendor at Firelink doesn’t sell the stuff. And I went to the blacksmith to see if any of the various weapons I can make do lightning damage. Nope. No lightning damage weapon options yet. And I went to the guy that gives me weapons in exchange for Boss Souls, and none of those options were for weapons that do lightning damage either, sadly.

Oh well, so I guess lightning damage is not an option for me after I use up the 6 or so more of those things that I’ve found as loot throughout the world.

I think if you actually review the thread you will find out that isn’t what is happening. Perhaps in the last post I went too far and if so I will change that.

Sirrius is supposed to be available for that fight but apparently she isn’t always there. I am not sure what triggers her. I believe if her summon sign is there it is left of the door in the landscaping.

I have been trying to make weapons of every style in this play thru, all starting with the Lothric Sword. The only one I haven’t made is the Lightning Sword. So I looked up where the lightning gem was a read that it scales with a faith build. Now I know why I have never used a Lightning Sword, as I have never done a faith build. And the gem does come late in the game.

Irithyll Dungeon does indeed have some heavy Tower of Latria vibes. Those…whatevers, with their line of sight health bar curse are possibly even more annoying than Winter Lanterns.

I’m inspired by this thread! I’m going to start a herald and try to run it with a spear/DEX build. Which weapon and infusion would you recommend? I know I’m going to have to deal with just the standard spear for a bit until the settlement.

I think you missed the spirit of my post by taking that quote out of it’s original context. I was talking about allusions. Not story beats, or whatever. They are perhaps too frequent and in your face…if you’ve played all the other games.

Fair enough. I’ve played all the games besides Demon’s Souls, and I didn’t find DS3’s allusions bothersome, or too frequent. I felt there was enough new in there, that the callbacks were additive, not taking away from anything. And for me personally, it was cool to see updated things from the past.

But I haven’t lived with these games for years and years. My souls experience has been limited to a stretch of months confined to this year. They are very dear to me, but they haven’t been a part of my life forever.

I know the community at large has mixed feelings about DS3 and this very issue. But the souls community seems to have a lot of problems with a lot of things ; )

I’m running a Herald now for my second play through and I ditched the starting spear as soon as I picked up the Astora Straight Sword from the chest in the starting area, which I then infused with fire immediately (started with the fire gem). It’ll keep me going until I can find a better spear/weapon.

Managed to find my way to the Profaned Capital, but I’d better head back to Irithyll because I’m positive I haven’t exhausted that quite sprawling area.

Started to play a bit more. Went up some stairs.

Motherfu-

yessssssssssssssss

Thanks for the heads up on the Pyromancer teacher folks. I was able to rescue him yesterday and learn some new spells and level up my pyromancer glove. Though not much, since I keep using all my Titanite on other stuff, so I could only make my glove +2. I haven’t really tried the other spells yet either.

I also used this break to strip down a little more. Since the second form of the abyss watchers use fire so much, I’d put on my best fire gear and as a result was in the fat-rolling range, so I decided to stop carrying my axe and bow, so I can medium roll again.

I had a few decent tries at the Abyss Watchers last night. I can reliably get to that second stage. There were a couple of tries when I thought I had it, but sometimes you can be doing extremely well, and then he fires off a combo that connects and is so devastating. Oh well. I think I went from 14 embers when I started down to 7 embers now, so I guess I’ve had 7 runs at this thing. Hopefully I’ll get it before I run out of embers.
