THE DEAD WALK AGAIN AS CAPCOM CONFIRMS DEAD RISINGTM 2
Sequel to 1.5 million-plus seller announced for multiple gaming platforms
London – February 9, 2009 - Capcom®, a leading worldwide developer and publisher of video games, today confirmed that Dead Rising™ 2 is in development for three different gaming platforms: the Xbox 360™ video game and entertainment system from Microsoft and Sony Computer Entertainment’s PLAYSTATION®3 (PS3™) and the PC. The sequel to the 1.5 million-plus selling Dead Rising™, Dead Rising 2 will take the franchise to a new level of zombie-killing fun with tens of thousands of zombies, the all new gambling paradise of Fortune City to explore and conquer plus a host of new in-game objects that can all be used as deadly weapons to stave off the zombie assault.
Dead Rising 2 is set several years after the infamous zombie invasion of Willamette. Unfortunately, the zombie virus was not contained at the conclusion of Dead Rising, spreading unchecked throughout the United States and Dead Rising 2 depicts a country where zombie outbreaks continue to strike.
Dead Rising 2 is being developed in partnership with up and coming Canadian developer Blue Castle Games. A number of members from the original Dead Rising team will be working alongside Blue Castle Games throughout the development process, including Capcom’s global head of research and development, Keiji Inafune, who as the game’s Producer will play an active role in the project.
Released in 2006, Dead Rising won praise across the globe for its mix of intense zombie action and dark humour, garnering numerous awards including IGN’s “Most Innovative Design for Xbox 360”, Gamespot’s “Best Action-Adventure Game” for 2006 and “Action Game of the Year” at the 2006 Spike TV Video Game Awards.
The hamster ball looked brilliant, and so very Dead Rising.
The Casino is a great setting - you can model all kinds of wacky themes. And the zombies milling around slot machines and cheap attractions in the late-night neon haze just nails it.
So who’s the toolbag who isn’t Frank West? Loving the showgirls.
The graphics in those screenshots look way too good. Highly touched up. But that’s okay if they are. The one thing I’m scared of is if they try to make the game look too much better, then they’ll have to sacrifice having dozens and dozens of zombies on the screen at once like the original did. Hopefully they realize that its okay to sacrifice a little in looks if it means having more zombies on the screen.
I’m guessing (hoping) that they’ve nailed down the tech enough now, compared to Dead Rising’s relatively early release on the new generation, to allow both awesome graphics and dozens of Zombies shuffling around in a small area.
Also, I love the prospect of beating zombies with slot machines and having coins exploding out of them and showering everything.
I just hope they design the single player so it isn’t retardedly borked if you miss a timed event and didn’t save in the right location at the right time in the only save slot you have. More time to just wander the casinos and beat on zombies will be cool too.
It was a very bold and risky move desigining the save slots and mission structure the way they did but it made for a great game IMO. Dead Rising’s enemies weren’t the zombies. They were mostly harmless if you kept your wits about you. The main enemies weren’t even the human bosses. The enemy was TIME.
Dead Rising isn’t some exploration game where you’re enouraged to explore every nook and cranny. It’s a horror game where entering the safe zone is always breath of relief. Every attempt to leave that zone and enter the mall involves a carefully crafted plan of attack. I’m going to head towards the supermarket, rescue these people, and bring them back before the time runs out. Ok deap breath GO GO GO! It’s becasue of the time constraints that make the zombies deadlier. They slow you down. There are so many you need to take 'em out sometimes. You dash towards the room to beat the timer but you didn’t see the fat zombie lady in a moo-moo dive after the helpless asian dude. Great tense moments that really captured a good horror IMO.
I’ve played a million games that work the normal way, but this method was perfect for Dead Rising, and I’d love to see it some more. If nothing else, it got me to play through multiple times and experiment, something I often want to do with the games I play, but can never be bothered by the end.
You actually could just hang out and beat on zombies if you like. Ignoring the main plot entirely was possible, and you’d still get a game end that way. Amazing! Though I’d agree that a little more free time between events would be nice.
Really glad to see this coming to the PS3, Dead Rising is the only exclusive I really feel I missed out on. And it’s rather hard not to get excited when I see QT3 of all places get this pumped in the announcement thread!
I would love if we could just hop up and down in our seats in excitement over this and not get into another debate about DR’s method of saving, but I know that’s naive of me. :( But anyway, hops up and down :D
