Jason, not to nitpick, but you also have 6073 forwarded, yes?
Jason: i purchased and am running a new router (some Belkin model) and my NAT problems disappeared in Demigod, at least. Still can’t connect to a game successfully though (players always drop). So older routers still probably have some setting that’s preventing Demigod to connect. Rather retarded, nonetheless.
Yep. I have the whole 6000-6200 range forwarded, and confirmed to be open by the PFPortChecker app I linked to. Both UDP and TCP.
I’m rockin’ a D-Link DIR-655. Not a super brand new model, but certainly not old. It’s gigabit ethernet and I have almost everything in my apartment on a wired connection. That, and it has the same QoS stuff the gaming router does, which actually works wonders. I’ve tried disabling all that to fix Demigod, of course, and it made no difference.
Update:
So this is weird. There’s a brand-new update for my router’s firmware. Not that my previous one was old - late last year - but this one is like a week old. It mostly updates the router access page with a CAPTCHA and does some SharePoint stuff.
But after upgrading my firmware, Demigod works! I can easily connect in Pantheon and Custom games. I still have the ports opened, so I have no idea if it would connect properly with UPnP like every other game does (nothing else ever needs ports opened on my router, so maybe after the update Demigod would work properly that way as well).
I still blame the game…I haven’t had any other game with connection problems like this with the obvious exceptions of MMOs where the server is down and the like. Nobody should have to update their router’s firmware or open ports to reliably connect (barring the odd cases with really old and out of date routers that have UPnP problems and such).
But despite the game still being pretty broken, it now at least works “for me,” which is a step up.
It looks like the audio problem that causes stuttering is related to the bink movies and sound library, too. People earlier in this thread have isolated that. So hopefully they can fix that bug pretty quickly.
With any luck, by E3 people will be able to play and earn favor and stuff like that normally, and we can start griping about easy-to-fix stuff like “let me click on the column heads in the custom game browser to sort” and “the asterisk on the current player number is a poor way to mark a password protected game” and “we want the minimap to be clickable” and so on. :)
Clickable minimap yes!
Also, if I want to play against AI, I will play Single Player. Do not match me with 7 AIs in a 4v4 in multiplayer Skirmish.
And apparently I shouldn’t be able to play as Oak for the dark team in Pantheon.
…
Actually, I’ve been telling all my gamer friends to get this, since the net patch. So yay!
I’d love an option that says, “just wait longer if there are no human players.”
I played quick Pantheon game this morning…got myself and another guy vs. 2 AI. As you can imagine, we rolled them over pretty easily.
I shouldn’t tell you this a Rook player, but the Rook is REALLY REALLY slow. He can’t kill you if you don’t follow him back to his base of towers. As a matter of fact, until he’s at least level 8 or so, his towers aren’t even that big of a worry. As Oak, for instance, if I’ve got armor on, I charge him something fierce. Dodge or interrupt the hammer attack and take him down before he can get away.
In the later game, if you’re fighting a Rook that is built correctly (i.e. - focused on towers, then shoulder cannon, along with a bit of tower eating and boulder stun), he’s going to be a huge pain…if you take him on alone. Again, the Rook isn’t fast. Two of you warp in, attack him together, and kill him before he can heal or get away. Of course, I wouldn’t suggest doing that while he’s sitting in his tower forest. :)
Oh, and don’t attack the towers. That’s mana I put down there, not health. It won’t hurt me to cast that again in just a bit. You want me to run away and leave you to my towers without me hitting you at the same time.
No shit, right? Last night I was in a 4v4 skirmish with one other human player on the opposite team. It’s not fun, it’s not challenging, and it’s certainly not what I want to be doing if I click on “multiplayer”.
GPG/SD don’t make it explicitly clear (enough), but Pantheon is a war of Dark vs. Light, and that means you can only use one side’s heroes. . . and for each individual pantheon tournament, you’re locked into one side to prevent people from bailing from sinking ships in the final days of a tourney.

barring any more issues with games loading on my computer, I’ll be up for some noob friendly rounds around 9 tonight if anyone is going to be on.
Re: networking issues, I guess it’s ironic that I avoided all the problems connecting to people but got hit by the sound bugs and other various ones.
Re: UI suggestion, the one that I really want is the ability to view the skill tree while dead, as it’s the only time that you really have to stop and think about upgrades during the game imo.
I’ll try to be on tonight in #qt3 as well, 9ish pacific.
count me in tonight as well around 9 or 10ish in the Qt3 channel: its good hearing all the issues are fixed, to some extent.
That may be so, but I’m on the Dark team, and I play as Oak.
Sorry, I thought you were being sarcastic and wishing that you could play and wondering why it wasn’t letting you.
If you are dark and are playing oak, that’s fucking weird and makes you lucky. UB is my least favorite matchup as Oak, although he’s not impossible to take down. No problem with you!
Anyone played in any successful 4v4 or higher matchups yet without connection crashage?

Just had a horrible experience in multiplayer, two regulus on the same team, all they did was use sniper against me. Even as UB I couldn’t do anything against them as the second my health dropped below half the snipes came out and killed me instantly. This kind of crap is turning me off of Demigod more then the actually bugs and such.

Did you rage-quit in retaliation??
I just had a pretty bad game too. I was playing against 2 people who were both TB on the 2v2 map, one ice and one fire. My teammate was Erebus, and all three of them were in the same LAN center. My teammate, it seemed, was hell-bent on losing, and so he would bat straight into the middle of the enemy, hit mist form, and consider his job done. No biting, no stunning, nothing. Just bat, mist, afk. I had no less than 20 kills by the end of the map, and he had 3. We lost just at the very end because he had fed so much gold to the enemy with his 20+ deaths that they managed to buy whatever insane artifacts they wanted.
Being matched up with bad teammates in this game is truly frustrating. It lasted over an hour. What a nightmare.
Not so far this week with the new patch, but in the past, yes. In fact, most of the games I’ve played online so far have been 4v4.
Either through luck or science, we’ve had the most success when only letting people join our games one at a time – i.e., one person creates the game, then he opens up one spot, someone joins, then he opens up a second spot, someone joins, and so on – until everyone is in and we’re ready to launch. This is an extreme pain in the ass for teams unless you’re all using voice chat to coordinate (which my group does).
Last night, with the latest patch, I played in one full 3v3 match after spending approximately 15 minutes jumping into different games, trying to find one where everyone could connect to each other.
I don’t always mind the delay – it can be entertaining to BS with people as I wait for a game to start (or not start).

See, to me, I’d find that loss frustrating but something I could learn from and hopefully avoid in the future. What too many people seem to be doing (myself included) is picking the ONE Demigod they like every game, building it and kitting it out the same way every game, regardless of what their opponents are doing or which Demigods their opponents and teammates have selected. I don’t think that’s how the game is supposed to work.
It’s like I said to my buddy Norm this morning: Demigod is like X-Men. Wolverine is supposed to fight Sabertooth. Send him up against Magneto or any one of dozens of other mutants that render his strength, healing, and claws useless, and he’s screwed.
Some of these Demigods clearly aren’t meant to go toe-to-toe with each other, and for me, discovering which combinations work best with and against each other is a fun process.

Hey comic book nerd, give me your lunch money! BTW, I like to imagine this conversation as part of the group discussing Lost at the local Gamestop with Sarkus. :)
But, yeah, it’s a great point that’s lost on most people talking about their ultimate builds and which demigods are “imba” and who needs to be nerfed. What’s going on in demigod depends so much on context.
