I had replied to this last night, but for some reason it didn’t seem to post.
Anyway, basically what I’d said was that, that period was not the best time of my life (you try being Derek Smart in 1996-97 and you’ll only begin to imagine it).
And while that post (which you obviously got from your new best friend, Huffman’s site) was not one of my finest moments, I stand by it - as I do everything I have ever written and/or spoken.
I wasn’t aware that in a society where I can cuss the president (which I personally wouldn’t, of course), laugh at the govt., watch porn - among a host of other liberties, why it precludes me from posting off-colour and blatantly offensive stuff online - and to an asshole troll, is puzzling.
And only a twit like you would try to associate my posting - to a troll no less - with my being a game developer. You don’t see me commenting about that toothless cross-dressing bitch you’re hanging out with. Why would I?

I’m no expert on this controversy - in fact I know very little about it and don’t care all that much but…
Can you explain how your unaccredited Ph.D. is bona fide? I mean, I have a Ph.D. from an accredited institution and I knew how hard it was to get. People failed, others were sent to law school, there were classes and an oral examination - these things mark the University of Toronto program as accredited. Most unaccredited schools are in such a class because they don’t have this rigor. I’ve known some school programs to be de-accredited because they failed to maintain the proper level of schooling.
Yeah, you’ve done a lot of great stuff. Programming, designing, yada yada. No argument there. I knew a lot of other people who did too (Doctors Without Borders, Clerking at the Hague, etc.) but chose to go through the rigors of an accredited program because of what the creditation meant to them (and, of course, their careers).
I get a lot of spam mail from places offering me a Ph.D. based on life experience, and I get the sense that even if I’d spent my life eating pizza in my basement I would get the degree. I hope that this is not the case with your “institution” - maybe it was Hare Krishna University or Hamburger College, I don’t know. I’m just curious as to how a man of your obvious intelligence places an unaccredited degree in the “bona fide” category.
(This is not a hostile e-mail…just curious. And Mr. Huffman, I’d rather you not answer this on Derek’s behalf. I would like him to be in a good mood when he gets around to reading this.)
If you have Ph.D. (I don’t know who you are and I’m not saying that you don’t), then I would expect you to know the meaning of these words. If not, look them up and you’ll have your answer.

Whats funny is, enough time has passed for huffman to have gotten a phd himself. Not that everyone is after one, of course. I find it amusing though, to that he’s so wrapped in crazy that he is actually damaging himself, or at least keeping himself half insane for nearly a decade (which must be affecting his life), while Derek is doing fine.
For the record, Derek’s PM cleared things up to my satisfaction. I see no reason to pursue this matter further. Case closed for me. It frankly isn’t that interesting a tale, but I can be nosy around lunchtime.

But quite frankly, there isn’t much to be said. The granting body of my degree is listed in Dr. Bears book, Bear’s Guide To Earning Degrees By Distance Learning, CH 21 Other Schools with Nonresidential Programs. It isn’t a diploma mill. Never was. In fact, in previous editions (I have two) of that same book, it was listed in a separate section.
For those who don’t know what a diploma mill (I didn’t until I got Dr. Bears book and noted the distinction - prior to which like most, I equated degree mill to unaccredited) is, watch your spam mail. And to think that in the late eighties to early nineties - when the web wasn’t even what it is today - there were diploma mills where I could have obtained it from, is not only preposterous, its just the same rubbish that Huffman posts about one thing or another.
Thats just the usual spin doctoring on Huffman’s part because it fits his aged agenda. In fact, he only started the diploma mill angle when some prick, Ed Bain, whom I trusted with this info, took my email about it and made it public on the Usenet. I learned my lesson from that one.
And from that point on, Huffman figured he had me. So he tried convincing his sychophants - and any twit who would listen - that every university in Dr. Bear’s books (he has three books about DL in the series, each one catering to different aspects of this) was a diploma mill. Until of course, a bunch of people (some PH.D’s) and Dr. Bear himself. called him on it. Huffman, again, tried to drag Dr. Bear into his stupid rubbish. That ended pretty darn quick and I have the posts to prove it. In fact, it wasn’t until 1998 that I even knew it was listed in the book and thats when I went out (after speaking to Dr. Bear in confidence) and bought a copy. And sure enough, it was there alright.
Late last year, my attorney bought the 14th Edition (ISBN 1-58008-202-5) and discovered that it was now in the above mentioned CH21. He did this because it is absolutely critical that we have this information if I am to continue using the title and would even think of taking legal action against that prick. Which is why, its quite simple really. I have a PH.D. I think Mercedes. You think Hugo. Your fucking problem. I like my Mercedes. As long as it is a bona fide degree, unaccredited or not is 100% irrelevant. And to call me a fraud is libel. Pure and simple. And to follow me around and harrass me over it, is psychotic and criminal cyberstalking.
It is widely known that even accredited schools lose accredition at some point or another and in most cases, the students end up being screwed. Some of you might recall the scandal with Nova (?) university, a well respected uni that had a similar problem if I recall in which graduating students found out that their program was no longer accredited.
If I wanted an accredited degree, I could have got one in under a year or to. And most especially in the time that this shit has taken. I could enroll at MIT’s DL program if I wanted to. Nova Southeastern is 30 mins from me. Several GAAP schools are within my grasp. Why don’t I do it? Because I don’t need to. I am perfectly happy with the one I have. And if I do pursue another - and end up with a double PH.D., that would be for my own pleasure more than anything else.
I really have a lot of respect for developers and industry people that take the time to post on gaming message boards. After all for most of us this is a hobby (or addiction), and their insight is always valuable and appreciated.
I used to frequent and post quite regularily at Evil Avatar.com and they had frequent visits from Dave C (Bioware), George B. (3D Realms) Cliffy B (and other Unreal Devs) and Derek as well and many more. Over time certain people on the board including the owner started baiting the developers, insulting their work in a non-constructive manner. Most of them don’t post there any more which to me is a loss to the community. I don’t even visit the site anymore.
There is a great community here at Qt3 who are quite passionate about their hobby. It would be shame to see the situation around here degenerate. Bill , give it up. I am familiar with your website and the Voodoo Extreme flamewares and while it might have elicted a few yucks at one point the jokes really getting old.

Where, in any of that, did I say I wanted to fight you or anybody else? All you’ve done is prove-- again-- how entertaining your outbursts are. And thus reinforced this seemingly endless cycle you and Huffman are locked into.

At one point I think that there was some bizarre symbiotic relationship going on like the flea who infests the rhino’s butt. To some degree, both parties involved provided some measure of satisfaction to the other (I was never good at anologies).
You have to admit though it has gone on too long. I think if Derek wanted to to still participate he would still post on Usenet where this kind of stuff belongs. This is clearly not the case, and Bill has a habit of showing up wherever Derek does. I suppose though he could just ignore it. Who knows
