Desktops are fun

Heh, technically, yeah. That’s for the Activision contract I got signed onto through my repping company. I’m doing POP and merchandizing in EB, Best Buy, and Gamestops through X-mas. Easy extra money.

Ah, okay. I was in an EB a few days ago and caught a Nokia rep going on and on about the virtues of the N-Gage to the sales staff and how the N-Gage was a gaming revolution - how the battery lasts 10 days in standby, how easy and simple it is to swap games in and out, and how stylish the phone design is. Hopefully your role for Activision isn’t nearly as annoying (it was annoying to hear, and I was just browsing and overheard the pitch to the employees, I can’t imagine how it must be listening to that on a regular basis).

The guy at the local EB here was doing a hard-sell on the N-Gage to a curious customer here in Burlington, VT this weekend. The guy was seeming interested, so I had to pipe up… “Uh, you know the phone part doesn’t work here, right?” The EB guy claimed it did. “Dude, I have an eval unit. It doesn’t work anywhere in Vermont. There are no GSM signals here.” “It’s Vermont,” he says, “all cell phone coverage is bad.”

Idiot. The closest place you can get a GSM signal is Saratoga Springs, NY or Montreal. The phone is a $300 Game Boy here.

What did you get off ebay?
Is that copy of Halo legitimate? What about the crack directory? tsk tsk :-)
What did Tommy send you?
What was the issue with BestBuy or were they just emailing you out of courtesy…?

hrrm… I might go have a look at the rest of your site and it’s directories…

nice setup by the way

(/me is stuck on a single 15 inch scxreen in 1024x768 nngh)

Balut - Hahahaha. That’s terrific. It’s nice to hear you guys are out there spreading the word about NGage. “Fail, damnit, fail!” ;)

Nah, my job isn’t nearly as degrading. I don’t interact with the customers at all, any my propaganda never exceeds, “So do you know about game X? No? Here’s a info sheet. Read at your leisure.” Most of the job is making sure that the ad space Activision paid for is properly arranged, chcecking the number of facings on products, pre-sell activity, etc. Like I said, the job’s cake.

Nutsak, you’re an inquisitive little fella. I recently snagged a drawing tablet off Best Buy. Halo is…an…evaluation copy…yeah…that’s it. ;)

Tommy sent me…SPAM. lol

And I just changed email addresses over, so Best Buy was notifying me my new email addy was golden.

And thanks! I’m rather happy with the whole thing. Sure cuts down on my page-flipping.

AHA!

My two monitor’s combined number of pixels now is 3993600. Your dual 1600x1200 resolution is only 3840000 pixels.

BOW BEFORE MY UBERGEEKNES! :D[/quote]

Shrug

I don’t set my res as high, but I have a Sony WDM-F900 and a 1280x1024 LCD attached. The res on the Sony is “only* 1600x1024, but it’s a 24”, 16:10 monitor. At some point, I’ll attach a bigger LCD.

I could set it for 1920x1080, I suppose, but that seems like overkill.

So really, I have the equivalent of 2.5 displays attached.

:D

Can we just stop all this dancing around the issue and talk about penis size?

And yes, you guys are making me feel very inadequate.

I do have a question – in games that allow alt-tabbing to the desktop, will a two-monitor display allow me to have a Word document open in the second display while I’m playing a game? And I’d get to it by alt-tabbing? That would actually be quite handy for me.

If the game allows ALT-tabbing, then the answer is yes. I often have an email client open in the second monitor while playing, and can actually see the headers of incoming messages.

Note that the second monitor resolution shifts when you run a game, so you may have to position your app off-center. But it works quite well.

Yeah, I’ll second what Case said. When I was slogging my way through SimCity4, I absolutely had to keep the FAQ open on another monitor to keep some easy reference handy.

A Mark, don’t worry - As far as penis size goes, I’m sure you’ve got nothing to worry about. Let’s call the monitors overcompensation on my part.

So you’re saying that both monitors have to be able to support whatever resolution the game is being run at? Does the dot density matter? I can pick up a used monitor for cheap. Are there any hardware limitations I need to worry about?

Not exactly.

Say both your monitors run at 1280x1024.

You run a 3D game at 1024x768.

Both monitors autoswitch to 1024x768, even though the game is only running on the first monitor.

Now let’s say you have one monitor that can run at 1600x1200 and the second one maxes out at 1280x1024. When you run a game on the first monitor at 1600x1200, the second monitor remains at 1280x1024 – at least, that’s been my experience. So you should be okay.

I’m still trying to figure out whose desktop this is, but I strongly suspect that it’s someone on this board.

I use the same thing at work. I merge the two windows desktops together with synergy2 so that I don’t have to pull out the extra keyboard and mouse. I’m still waiting for a Mac OS X port of the client so that I can get rid of my Mac’s keyboard and mouse too. It would be awesome to see my mouse cursor float seemlessly between the three monitors on my desk.

Thanks for the heads up on this program Roger. I may try to set it up tonight.

That’s a funny desktop. Those email headers are good one’s.

Yeah, there seem to be a number of Qt3 references on the desktop.

By the presence of tentacle porn, I’m gonna wager it’s Anders. Desktop still doesn’t quite look gay enough to be his though. ;)

I think you missed the Excel spreadsheets on the desktop.

Yeah, I had no idea Koontz was into lesbian porn.

Holy crap, don’t you realize what this means? It all makes sense now…

KOONTZ IS ANDERS!
ANDERS IS KOONTZ!

I feel sleepy…

Holy shit – this is the coolest thing I’ve seen since VNC. I’ve been just sitting here mousing from my WinXP screen to my Linux screen for about 10 minutes now, grinning like a goof the whole time.

Took all of about three minutes to get it fully installed and running, too.

Roger: Mac port can’t be that far off – have you tried building it from source? After all, OSX is a Unix, so it’s worth a shot.

I tried it and it works great for my two XP setup.
