I hadn’t seen the name “Desslock” in print in a long time, so I have to say I did a double-take when I read the following in Steve Klett’s “Alternate Lives” column in the current (SEPT 03) issue of PC Gamer:
FAREWELL…BUT NOT GOODBYE
This is the end of the trail for your fearless RPG columnist - the world of big business and its attendant piles of real gold and real wenches have lured me into their dark embrace. (though I’ll still be keeping up with the genre and doing reviews for PC gamer.) Not to fear: this column will be in very good hands, as none other than RPG guru Desslock will assume the reins starting next month.
Welcome back to being an RPG guru, Desslock. Does this mean you’ll finally be updating your web page?
What are you trying to say about the Tiger Beat shots I have of myself on the back of my business cards? Don’t hate me because of my movie-star good looks.
A real person with feelings lives behind this chiseled, square-jawed exterior.
Are you living in some pandimensional state that has 45 hours in a day? How do you find time to do your lawyerin, play Morrowind for 6 months, AND write a column for PC Gamer?!
You’re like insanity toast coated with crazybutter!
Thanks, guys (and thanks to Steve K. for the mention). Happy to get the opportunity to develop my relationship with Cocanut Monkey and get the chance to make Vede jokes for a larger audience. I wrote a review and a column for the next issue.
Bah - all the mags are good in some ways, and not as good as the others in other respects. I’ve read both PCG and CGW forever, and CGM (which I only don’t get because it’s a pain to track down) has a great staff of writers.
Frankly, I’d really like to be able to cover RPGs at PC Gamer in the same way that Andy Mahood writes about Sims/Racers, and Bill Trotter does about Wargames-- those guys are great, and make their respective genres interesting to read about even though I don’t generally have interest in games of the genre (although I’m an old-timer wargame nut). I appreciate the PCG guys giving me the chance to do something similar.
Plus - needs to be restated – making Vederman jokes is now LEGAL.
Well, if anything, this news will make me pick up a PC Gamer again. No offense to Ved and Co. but, I, at some point a couple of years, ago decided subscribing to CGM and then breaking down and buying newstand copies of CGW and PCG was not fiscally responsible. I kept subscribing, but quit grabbing the other two.
SO you start in the September issue, Desslock? Are the two items brief enough that I can just read them while standing at the magazine rack.

Well, I hope you get more than the quarter page those poor guys get now.
Whatever happened to the full or double page in depth genre columns we used to get in the mags??
I’d trade several dozen useless previews and screenshots to get those back…
Does this mean Desslock’s pic has to appear over the column? I don’t recall seeing your mug…errr “portrait” elsewhere and therefore can’t judge if you meet Vede’s/PCG’s criteria for handsomeness.
