So if I don’t have an exotic primary, and really only ice breaker as an exotic, should I get the red whatever thingy? I’ve been terrible at my Destiny homework, maybe a run through weekly and nightfall are called for this weekend.

I like my Ice break, so I need a main primary purple rifle
What do you suggest as my main primary purple rifle?

Yeah, truth is OK in pve, although i wouldn’t tend to use it as my exotic slot there.
In pvp though, it used to be awesome on the really long range maps, like the moon map. You could nail folks from across the map with it and there was basically no way to evade it if you were in the open.

Two funny things from tonight. Start doing a PUG Weekly 30, guy on team is xxxxxPRO, I lol at his name but he is REALLY good, he is just killing everything in sight. We get to Archon and he STANDS AT ARCHONS FEET, gets blown up right away. No way we can get him. Other guy and I chip at everything and pretty quickly take down Archon. Just before we do I get a PM: “Come res me you fucking idiot”. I text him back “Die that far out and wait for rez”. What a jerk. Despite him dying at Archon the kills are 40 40 120 to him. Imagine being that good a player but that bad a person…
Get asked to help kill Crota NM, we wipe first time but smoke it second. I swap chars to go do something else without going to orbit. When I log back in to that character SUROS drops into my inventory. Thank you Santa Crota =)

That all depends on the perks it has. And honestly also weapon preference. Honestly none of the vendors really have any great guns except maybe the Something Rapier if you like Scout Rifles. And as much as I try to force myself to like them I just can’t. I prefer Hand Cannons and Red Death. Red Death has been my favorite primary since I got in September, just like how it looks, how it feels, healing on kills, fast reloads, etc. Can’t say I really like pulse rifles except for RD. Long story short, just use what you like to use.
I honestly wish they didn’t nerf Auto-Rifles like they did, cause all they did was switch Pulse and Autos with each other. I felt they were in a really good spot, just that pulse rifles needed a buff. And three months from now when Bungie asks everybody what their favorite Auto Rifles are they’ll get the same mocking responses they got a month ago for Pulse Rifles and thus the cycle will continue.
Red Death is very situational, and I wouldn’t ever use it as an everyday primary. It also feels pretty weird. It was one of my first exotics, and I still really haven’t gotten use to the way it handles. It does it hard (even harder now with the patch), and if you like pulse rifles you could do a lot worse. If you can manage to score the purple pulse from hardmode laterns, I’d favor that over Red Death for everyday use.
But that said, if you have a lot of coins to burn, and tend to make runs on Mr. Crota, it could be a sensible purchase.
edit: and just for clairity, I tend to favor scouts, but have started working in pulses post-patch, especially on arc or rainbow nightfalls (using oversoul edict, purp pulse from hardmode lanterns).
Red Death sounds good, but I only had 3 coins. I just got 9 more by doing the weekly, but that’s still 11 short. Oh well. Hopefully it will come around again. I always wanted to try a good pulse rife. I still haven’t found a good auto rifle or pulse rifle in the game.

Oversoul Edict is very good, but sounds like you are a ways off from doing Crota Hard Mode.

Three little words is a very good pulse rifle now. Two shot kill in pvp.
Dust off those hand cannons and get ready for the Iron Banner. Boots and chest piece both at 36 light. Finally we can get rid of that crappy looking Crota gear!
(Plus it’s something to do before Bloodborne comes out next week)
http://ironbanner.info/ is a useful calculator for your progress. So is this thread from reddit: http://www.reddit.com/r/DestinyTheGame/comments/2zc4xb/guide_levelling_up_iron_banner_effectively_with/
Since you only need to hit level 4 for the armor this week and I don’t care about the autorifle at level 5, I might actually try to get two of my characters to level 4. Probably a terrible idea, but yeah, anything to get out of that ugly Crota gear.

Be advised the Iron Banner autorifle is turbo-trash.
I actually went to the trouble of getting one previously, and rolling it into a perfect version… and guess what? After I fully leveled it, expecting it to be a pretty cool rapid fire AR? Total garbage. Useless in every possible deployment, whether PvE or PvP.
I kept it in my locker for a while, since I had spent so much effort getting it, and knew that the IB items don’t give you any shards when you break them down… but last week I sharded it anyway, just to make room in my locker.
Don’t make the mistake I did… it’s a total waste, even with ideal perks.
I have yet to play any crucible whatsoever, being pretty focused on the vanguard treadmill and getting my armor (and level) up so I could compete in strikes and raids. Anyway, is Iron Banner a decent place to start or should I get my feet wet in the more generic stuff?
Iron Banner is the only reason I do PVP since Iron banner loot is generally pretty sweet. It is definitely a good path the level 32, but if you are below level 30 or so it will be really frustrating since level advantage is enabled in there.
Crucible is good for learning the ropes of PvP and the maps since the character and gear level advantages are (mostly) removed, Iron Banner is good for actually getting cool gear once you’re high enough level to not be destroyed by a strong (level 32) breeze.
OK, good to know. I’m level 27, forgot to mention that, so I’ll skip on this round of Iron Banner then.
Yeah 27 is really borderline. I’ve seen good 27-28 level players doing well, but it doesn’t seem a good place to start unless you are a multiplayer savant or something. Personally I can use all the advantage I can get.

Yeah, IB’s gonna be rough.
It can still be done, but you’re going to have a non-trivial damage penalty against level 32 players, which means that you’ll only beat them if you are significantly better than they are… and if you’ve never played in the crucible, then this is unlikely to be the case.
No, I’m not significantly better than your average twelve-year-old. I’ll just start out in regular old crucible.
