Wow, you guys seriously want extra Icebreakers? I just dismantled the second one I found earlier this week. If the Icebreaker was the only thing I needed to move between characters I could understand the convenience, but I’m also always juggling primary and heavy weapons, so it’s not like three Icebreakers would save me trips to the vault.

I guess I will take the afternoon off and see how it goes grinding Roc Strikes. Maybe I can get lucky and pull in 8 coins. Tonight will be tough to get much time in, but I can resume the grind for the early part of Saturday as well. With enough marks I can grab gloves to pop me up to 30 which might speed things up.

The linked article said 7 or more hours for a second character, but if it really was 4 hours, then two weekly runs would be a sure thing.

The three-four hour estimate was if you had two people helping the whole time. You’re doing one mission, while other people are playing through the next two missions and then waiting at the end for you to jump in and get credit for finishing them off. You’re sacrificing a trivial amount of XP (for the kills in that mission up to the end) for a considerable savings in time to get the big XP boosts for completing them. But in any case, that might still be a bit difficult to coordinate on short notice. It’s not a bad idea to work on that for the future though. Two (or three!) opportunities to run Weekly Heroics and Nightfalls each week will certainly give you a better chance at fancy exotic loot. Who knows, maybe Xûr will be selling the Gjallarhorn next week!

Setting aside the second character idea, all other things being equal I would try to do the Nightfall as soon as possible. First of all, it’s really unlikely, but you could get the icebreaker itself. Failing that, if you get awarded strange coins (I’ve seen up to 10 for a Nightfall reward), then you can also relax knowing all you need to do is the Weekly Heroic sometime in the next day and a half. And even if you just end up with some garbage legendary gun, the Nightfall gives you a boost to all experience and reputation gains until the next weekly reset (Tuesdays), so it’s always preferable to do that as soon as possible for the benefit to those strikes you might end up working on later.

I’ve had good luck using Destinylfg.com to find people looking to do the Nightfall. It’s considerably easier to find a capable group for that than trying to organize a full raid team that can cooperate well. I did it with two random people last night, a high-schooler from New Jersey and someone from Australia, and they were both friendly and helpful.

I don’t know exactly what my plans are tonight, there’s talk of a dinner somewhere. But I leave work around 5:30 EST, so feel free to send me a message on PSN (they usually show up on my phone) if you want to coordinate some teamwork tonight.

Assuming it’s already been said, but in case it hasn’t…The weekly on hard is the best way to grab coins… 9 per character who completes it.

I covered that in one of my walls of text, but if I wasn’t me, I’d be skipping my posts too :)

I’ve got a lot of Iron Banner to do for my hand cannon, but I 'm sure I can peel off for a nightfall. I agree with Schmidt that running that should be job one since it could potentially shorten your road to Icebreaker considerably.

Is it better to run a blind group in Nightfall right away? I have never used the lfg site and I am still 28 with the Scout rifle and MurMur. I expect to be home at 1pst/4est to grind away for 5 or so hours. Can we three (Prankster and Schmidt) pull off the Nightfall and weekly then? I would just grind Roc when I am alone. There is a dinner around 6/9 that would cost me greatly to miss and after that I may not be able to return until Saturday morning.

First, don’t miss dinner since real life is definitely more important than an Icebreaker.

I’m happy to help during your window sometime tonight. Fortunately the nightfall is pretty much the easiest possible so either with friends or LFG it shouldn’t be too tough even being a bit below level.

Honestly, the best time to do Nightfall is Tuesday, after it flips, because the main benefit is that you get +25% rep from everything you do for the rest of the week.

So, for instance, we usually do Nightfall, and then do the weekly… Normally, you get 400 rep for doing the weekly, but you get 500 if you’ve done it after the nightfall.

That’s just background info though… The nightfall this week is fairly easy, you could probably do it with a group of randoms

Yeah, this is sort of the worst weekend to try to binge game. I will do what I can and appreciate whatever help is offered. If I can nab the Ice Breaker, I figure that releases all pressure to keep up with you guys as that plus 30 light armor (which I am spitting distance from) will free me up to play whenever rather than being a slave to 15 different timers. And that would be better for real life and it’s many future dinners.

I’m going to have to disagree with this ; )

Add me to the list of folks who are willing to help you score your coins for this magnificent weapon. I don’t think I’ve ever been happier about anything in a game as I was this morning at 415 (I get up at four for work) when I saw the xur-rise and got me an Ice Breaker. Been waiting for this baby forever.

I’m around all weekend, and have a good friend who will definitly help us out running nightfalls/heroics/strikes whatever.

EDIT: it also helps that this week’s nightfall/heroic is a cinch, did the nightfall last night in like 15-20 minutes, arc heavy weapons FTW

EDIT 2: won’t be around till late tonight, but I will be around most of saturday/saturday night. If you do find yourself with some extra hours to kill in the wee hours tonight I’ll be on with a friend of mine ; )

If I was you, I would list my guardian on Destinylfg.com and in the comment section just say something honest like “I have a mic, looking for some friendly Guardians to show me the ropes on my first Nightfall”. Worst case scenario, nobody sends you any invites and you just do it later with me and merry or something. The comment should keep away jerks who might complain that you don’t have good enough weapons.

A group of three people all in your position (level 28, only your Murmur for arc damage) would honestly have a very hard time with the Nightfall, but if two level 30-31 players are just looking for a third person, you won’t be holding them back, and a third person to help revive people when things go bad is always helpful.

So I’d try that first. If it doesn’t work, no big deal, do the Nightfall later.

A final note, when you list your Guardian on Destinylfg.com, it will keep you on the site for 30 minutes, then automatically delist you. For that 30 minutes while you’re listed there, don’t start doing Roc strikes, or anything else you can’t drop on short notice. If you’re in the middle of a Roc strike and get messages about doing the Nightfall, then you’re either abandoning your Roc Strike partners, or hoping someone will wait for you to finish before you can start the Nightfall.

Definitely do the weekly first at level 30 as that will get you 9. Do the nightfall too if you can, I ran it this week and got 11 coins as a reward.

Blue engrams can make strange coins. Try the Venus Loot cave for blue engrams, run Vanguard Roc, or do PvP if that’s your thing. Honestly it would probably be faster to do what the others said and level a character of the same class to 20, send him gear from your main, and do the weekly again.

Forgot to mention that I am going to try like hell to get my armor up to 27 on my PS4 warlock and get enough coins for an IB on that account too. It’s going to be a difficult run between today and tomorrow but I believe in the impossible dream. I might start 1 or 2 more locks to be able to do the daily public events for coins and also if I could somehow get one or both to 20 I could swap armor for more nightfall runs. Of course I’d need a couple of 30+ with serious Arc armories to carry me a bit through Sepiks…

Holy crap, I’ve been reading through this thread trying to decide if I should pick this game up and it reads like Japanese stereo instructions to me. I don’t have a shooter on my Xbone yet, and I thought the demo for this was pretty cool. Seems like opinions on this game are pretty polarized, though. Is this a pretty good shooter if you’re into single player with a bit of noodling with online?

It’s a great shooter, no question, but a lot of the reason people love it is for the endgame loot chase. If you are playing it mainly solo it’s hard to recommend.

You rang?

Ok, here’s the question that I think sums everything up:
Did you play Halo? Did you like it for its multiplayer and gunplay elements?

Because if the answer is yes, then you should definitely get Destiny. It’s basically an evolution of Halo in many ways, with a less coherent storyline, and some extra MMO stuff thrown in.

The good:
The gunplay feels very solid.
The graphics are pretty much flat out awesome. Bungie did an amazing job its new engine, in my opinion.
The enemy AI is quite well done.
The PvP is very fun at times.

The bad:
The story, as far as its represented in game, feels very half baked. There are all kinds of rumors surrounding why this is the case, from stuff stemming from firing the guys who made the story originally, to marketing guys changing things around, etc. I have no idea what is the real cause, but the in game story is less compelling than Halo’s. Although, to be fair to Destiny, I think it holds a great deal of promise, as the groundwork for lots of cool stuff is there.
The PvP is terrible at times. This may actually be better on the XBone, but on the PS4 at least, the connectivity for PvP seems incredibly flakey, going back till thanksgiving at least. (It seemed better prior to that) And the result is that sometimes you’ll have guys who are virtually invincible due to them warping all over the place… or you’ll unload a clip into them, they’ll run up and kill you… And THEN they will die, 5 seconds later. When this kind of thing happens, it’s very frustrating.

Overall, I’d definitely recommend the game. It’s easily worth $60 bucks at least.

Good info, thanks Timex. To answer your question, I’ve played each of the Halo games and enjoyed them both for their single player campaign and also the multiplayer elements. I said I “noodle” with online multiplayer mainly because I enjoy it, but I’m not especially good at it. Years of playing PC and console FPS games has attuned my reflexes to handling AI opponents quite well, but I’m fairly at sea against other people, who tend to leap erratically as if on pogo sticks. So yes, I’m interested in multiplayer, I just accept how much I suck at it. Looks like I can get this on Amazon for $50, so it’s probably going to be a good bet for me.

I play on XBone, and the PVP is fine, for what it’s worth.

Destiny is pretty much the only game I play at this point. The raids (6-man dungeons) are definitely the best thing about the game, but running them with a PUG instead of friends reduces their fun factor by about 60%. The game itself is wonderful to play, the shooting is top notch, the guns are interesting and diverse, the enemy AI is good, and the way you can seemlessly transition from public areas to instanced zones and back to public areas is a technical marvel, in my opinion.

That being said I feel like a terrible person for purchasing this game because I’m encouraging bad behavior by developers. The story is terribly executed, which is tragic because the world building they did is excellent. There is clearly fully developed content that was pulled out of the core game to be sold as DLC, you can see this from youtube videos released months ago where people glitched into expansion zones and they were populated with monsters and bosses. They charged $20 for an expansion pack that consists of 15 minutes of story missions (45 if you run them on hard and it takes more bullets to kill aliens) and a raid that is soloable with exploits due to poor play testing. They can’t figure out a competent loot system and immediately made old content irrelevant upon releasing the new raid. They also give Playstation players extra missions, maps, and gear which Xbox players don’t get, but the tradeoff for that is PSN which sounds like it’s still less than stable.

I’ll keep playing because there’s nothing else to play, and running the raids with my friends is fun. Now that the technical foundation is laid, hopefully they improve upon these problem areas for Destiny 2.

EDIT: I’ll add that in PvP, you don’t see as much bunny hopping because your accuracy goes out the window when you fire in mid air. Pretty much the only viable weapon to fire while jumping is a rocket launcher. I got used to shooting people while airborne in Titanfall and I had to break that habit for Destiny. I also spent the first 2 weeks trying to run on walls.
