A word of warning - careful with the Bombcast this week. Now that I have heard the French Canadian, I don’t think I’ll be able to unhear it when half of these dudes talk at me.

I wonder why he left qt3…I liked reading his posts. And would be interested in his opinion on dx3.

Usually I just adore the Giantbomb crew, but Jeff is pretty brutal with his thoughts on DXHR. He’s not wrong on many of them though, it’s just… man, way to suck the fun out of a game. Sheesh.

Upon further review, textures are inconsistent. Sometimes I get killed and can easily read all the warning labels on pipes in the ceiling. Sometimes I walk up to an enormous lobby display and the text is clearly blurry

Liking it so far – messing around the detroit hub after returning from the first real mission. Very much in the style of the original game, perhaps even slavishly imitative in some respects, but nothing too bad about that as yet.

Anyhow, no problems to report yet, except one really old-school style RPG issue which isn’t all that bad. Fast-talked my way into the police station, and now I can loot the whole place while the police watch me do it. If I hack a door lock, a policeman will come running up to me, gun drawn, and shout at me but will otherwise do nothing, his little radar icon staying green, so I can just complete it at my leisure. When I’m done with the lock, he goes back to what he was doing.

So far there’s one really completely unbelievable thing in this game. There are people on the street in Detroit. Come on, you expect me to believe that people will walk around Detroit, out of doors, not in their cars? Last time I was there, you could stand on a street corner and look down straight avenues in both directions and not see a single other pedestrian. I read some Elmore Leonard book in which the Free Press journalists had a game called “King of the Corner” that described just this phenomenon. In this game, there are civilians everywhere, even friendly patrolling cops. Unreal…

I was only able to play for a couple hours last night, but I’m really digging it. The stealth gameplay reminds me of Metal Gear Solid, which for me at least is a very good thing. Only complaint is the load times, but hey, it’s an incentive not to get spotted or die.

I got tired of the try/fail cycle of the stealth path so now I’m a murdering bastard. It’s just easier to kill every cop in the station than to try and worry about avoiding them. Especially since they seem completely unable to comprehend the concept of air vents and consistently present their knees to me for easy shooting.

I believe it does. No deaths = no deaths at all. That’s how I am playing it.

I’ve been playing the OnLive version (comes included for free in PC retail boxes in the US). The graphics look okay like it’s using a mix of medium and high settings. I’ve been playing on mouse and keyboard and there seems to be some slight lag, but nothing game breaking. I’ve been watching some walkthroughs as well to see alternative paths that I’ve missed. I’ve botched the first missing myself.

I’ve been really liking the game so far. It really does remind me of the original. But where is my crowbar?!

Still going with the OnLive huh

I thought it would suck but after playing it about ten hours, I was wrong. Gives me higher hopes for Thief IV aka Thi4f.

Only got a chance to get through the first mission last night, and loved it. I have really only one complaint that’s not a big deal. I like to play without crosshairs whenever possible, something that the rise of iron-sights in games has made much more accessible. I can turn them off here, but when in cover that means I have no way to aim (until I get laser sights like at the beginning, of course). If I could set it to only have crosshairs enabled when I’m in cover, I would be happy.

Aside from that niggling complaint, I loved everything. Control feels good, which is a big plus. I’m going to give myself one start-over tonight because I flubbed the mission in a way I don’t like.

I’m playing mostly stealthy, trying to avoid guards and use nonlethal takedowns. If shit jumps off and I have to kill some guys, though, I don’t feel bad about it.

I had pre-ordered months ago. I just wanted people to know how that version performed even though experience is variable. It’s essentially the PC version minus the graphics options. I’m not trying to advertise or anything. I had also found it interesting that they were offering free codes with PC retail as well. I feel like OnLive is like a dirty word around here. I only use it because my pc is not powerful enough and that it’s very conveinent for me.

This is not the case. They’ll yell at you a couple of times, then if you continue hacking, they will kill you. They only do that if they see you do it, of course, but that means you can’t hack some of the computers in the main office area. Until you level up your hacking skill and can do it faster, anyway.

Like it so far. It’s a little ham-handed in referencing the first game, but I think that may be appropriate, as they are a completely different team trying to evoke the same vibe. Really impressed with how much effort they’ve put into setting and atmosphere.

I played about two hours of this last night. Long enough to get through the first real mission and the prologue mission. I’m really enjoying it. I took the sniper dart rifle and did my best to tranq guys and be silent, but I was discovered a few times and used lethal means to resolve those situations. So far the gunplay is pretty good in my opinion. Jeff Gerstmann commented on this week’s Bombcast that the shooting isn’t all that great, but even without any augs related to shooting I’ve been able to pull off headshots with ease. In addition I’m happy that, at his base level Jensen has just enough survivability (on normal) to live through a mistake, but not so much that you can take on encounters like Serious Sam.

So far I’ve chosen to upgrade my hacking ability. Based on reviews and what I’ve played so far, that seems like it’ll be very useful throughout the game. I also want to make sure I take the speech upgrade skill. I’m not planning to play the game using any particular character template. I think I’ll default to trying to be stealthy because that’s the path of least resistance, but I’m going to make sure my character is up for a fight and doesn’t have to run.

I work in downtown Detroit. There are lots of pedestrians walking around during business hours, but you’re right in that at night it becomes a ghost town unless you’re near one of the sports or entertainment venues.

Even so, this is a weird nit for you to pick. Presumably Detroit has moved on somewhat by 2027. With the success of a growing new tech business (Sarif) it’s reasonable to assume that people would once again be drawn back to living and working in the city, thus explaining pedestrians walking around at night.

His last couple of posts explain it, if you can find him in the user list.

This is silly, it’s a game.

Played this for a little over an hour last night (got through the prologue and maybe half of the first “real” mission). I’m planning to play with a similar style as I did Alpha Protocol: mainly stealthy/hacking/non-lethal, but willing to use a firearm if the situation calls for it.

I don’t really like that my ability to perform takedowns is tied to an energy meter that can only be refilled by consuming a powerbar, though. Is there an upgrade I can take at some point that allows my energy to recharge automatically over time? If not, are the consumables plentiful enough that this never really becomes a problem?

Maybe it was a console thing.
