I’m finding it really difficult to break out of my stealth / takedown pattern. It’s not just the XP rewards, which are considerable (2.5x more per kill, plus the 500 XP bonus if you get it). It’s that it’s so much safer when they have no idea you’re there. I do shoot people now and then, but usually it’s just as easy to get behind them and strangle them.
Since I’m just finishing of Detroit’s first round, I’m still really hurting for Praxis points. Whatever people may say about having “too many” at the end, there’s a fair segment of the game when there are at least a dozen things you’d like to buy but can’t yet.

I’m just past boss #2 and I’ve got all the augs that I think I need. I’d describe my play style as “violent completionist”. I will try and takedown non-lethally when I can, and I try to work in some roleplaying there. Groups who murder civilians get murdered, security guards sometimes get a pass depending how evil they are, civilians usually get a pass assuming they aren’t obviously evil.
What this means is that I use ducts to easily kill/disable every one in an area, and then hack everything in site and search every locker to get every piece of ammo and money ever.
My shining moment was sneaking into an area through the back way, then going out the front way and knocking out every single guard facing the wrong direction.
That is one thing I’m doing differently this time. Every hostile must go. There were definitely sections I missed before, particularly of Derelict Row, because I was continuing on once I reached the target, rather than doubling back to eliminate everyone. I’m also hacking everything, every door in Sarif Industries is unlocked now, which I didn’t do before. I skipped some of the police station targets, since I didn’t want to start taking down the police who were watching.
Honestly, while I’m having fun doing that, Deus Ex really was better by giving XP only for accomplishing goals. Deus Ex said “whatever you want to try will work,” Human Revolution says “you can be creative, but it’s better to take everyone out.” The creativity incentive is now mainly for making it easier to take people out, not to accomplish your mission.

Yes I agree. In fact thats an old lesson from pen and paper RPGs. The first pen and paper RPGs rewarded fighting only. Then latter they realized the players have more freedom of expression if you reward goals and roleplaying rather than monsters killed.

The way it should work is that you’re rewarded for whatever you do, and the game should specifically recognize your progress. You should earn the same progress experience no matter which path you choose to move through the game. Experience bonuses would be tied to hacking unnecessary terminals and finding hidden areas.
Ghost past a section? Get a ghost bonus.
Kill everybody with the pistol? Pistoleer bonus.
Lure a guard then beat him to death? Silent pugilist bonus.
Knock out everybody with the stun gun? Tasing bros bonus.
Hack a robot or turret to kill the enemies for you? Terminator bonus.
Talk your way out of combat? Chatty Cathy bonus.
Beat a large box robot without using an EMP grenade? Highly unexpected bonus.
Kill enemies from over 100 yards away? Eagle eye bonus.
Use crates to box in enemies? Improvisation bonus.
And so on and so forth.

Ok, that third boss fight is bullshit.

I wonder, anyone used great amounts of violence in the police station?
I tried but quickly died, so I did that section using stealth and takedowns.

Do you need to? Most cops don’t mind your presence, you can even talk to them.
I think they notice you if you hack something, so I had to stun a cop that was patrolling a corridor.
In fact, it’s funny how civilians go crazy and start cowering if you hack something in front of them, like one of those storage spaces in Detroit. “Oh no, someone is fiddling with a terminal!”
Probably one of the sections of the game that took me more time to “complete” since I went all Stealthy McStealth and refused to let any alarms go off or kill anyone; I even broke into the armoury and managed to get the PEPS early on thanks to a high hacking skill.

I wish the air ducts weren’t so easily exploitable. The AI has no idea what they are or how to deal with them. They’re basically a win button. They won’t even try to flush you out with grenades.

You don’t need to. In fact you can walk and talk in most areas. Still, i wondered if anyone chose the rambo way, and the possible consequences of butchering a few dozens of cops and civils.
I was actually wondering earlier if someone had slaughtered the entire police station. Because it seems like someone always does in games like this. There was no point in killing every civilian on the street in Deus Ex, and there are videos demonstrating that.

It was just easier to exterminate them than to try and sneak around.

Namir? Use grenades on him and pick up a laser or plasma rifle and use that.
Time for the spoiler tags.
3rd Boss
Whether your chip is glitched or not, it’s not that hard once you know his pattern. If you immediately run to the outer ring (to the left) after the cutscene, he’ll follow you around the ring, so you always know where he’s going to be. He’s cloaked, but you can see his shadow. So you can just get behind cover, and draw a bead down the corridor. When you see his shadow, shoot. When he jumps in the air, he’s throwing a grenade, so it’s time to run away, down the corridor.

Hmm, when I’m in a duct, and someone looks that way, they often see me and start shooting into the duct. I’ve also had them chuck grenades at me in the ducts too. Maybe I smell bad?

Did they patch it, or something? That wasn’t happening to me at first, but it seems to be a more frequent occurrence now.

I went in with good intentions, expecting a cutscene or two before continuing on my merry way, but…things got a bit out of hand. I don’t know if it’s because I entered through the basement or got caught hacking something. They simply wouldn’t leave me alone. Every non-civilian in the precinct was dead by the time I walked out the front doors. I didn’t ask for this!
The massacre was referenced in a single newspaper article but otherwise seemed to go unnoticed by the good people of Detroit.
