This game is just incredible. Game of the year for me so far.
It just oozes atmosphere with all it’s black and golds.
I love the thousand little touches, such as the couple arguing through the door when you first go to your apartment.

“Fine, I’ll try not to touch you too much with my cold metal hand”

The voice acting in this game was overall pretty good in Detroit.

But for China, I’m pretty damn sure they made sure the voice acting was terrible, just as a throwback to the first game.

Not sure whether or not I want to use the crossbow. It takes up less space than a silenced sniper rifle and can kill multiple opponents at one time, but the range on it is really wonky.

If one was to try the ‘don’t kill anyone’ achievement, does the prologue stuff apply to that? You’re only given that rifle, so I wonder.

Pacifist Achievement

Prologue applies.

If that wiki is right then the achievement is definitely bugged. I killed a guard in Hengsha by sniping him in the head with a sleep dart (apparently that’s lethal). Also, much further in the game I caused the death of a soldier because he was near a robot that I tossed an EMP grenade at. And yet, I got the Pacifist achievement.

How does it kill multiple opponents at once? I’ve never used it, it seemed to overlap with the sniper rifle too much.

Well, I saved/reloaded just to try it out on the streets of China, and it killed multiple civilians. I tested the rifle to see if bullets did the same thing, and they didn’t.

Just finished my Deus Ex playthrough, still using a Sneak-and-Pop technique, although I think I killed less people this time, as I was just better at using takedown/stungun. Stungun headshot nets almost as much as a takedown without the need for candybars. I actually finished with way more money and a fair amount more Praxis, about 10-12 from having everything maxed. Once I get hack5+high jump+Icarus+punch through walls, the game just becomes sweet, sweet butter. This time I only carried the stun gun, the 10mm, and the sniper rifle, so I could haul more ammo and candybars around.

Without Bastion, and upcoming Skyrim, this would easily be my game of the year. As it stands, it’s still one my all-time favs.

Just finished my first playthrough, (I know I’m late to the party).
Well, the game was incredible. Don’t know what else to say… Just incredible.

Lethal/Not-Lethal is kind of a weird thing in the game. I never managed to…what, overdose?..any “plot enemies” (guys in a hostile zone that was obviously a closed area), but I did manage to overdose a couple of thugs in the gang territory and eventually ended up just sneaking past them to be safe.

If that robot is the robot I think you’re talking about, that just makes me angry as hell. Because I totally saved that guy. It was a gigantic pain in the ass, but I saved that guy.

later game fight

I assume that we’re talking about the fight after the helicopter crash - which, by the way, is a stupid name, because that is not a helicopter - where I don’t think it’s the bot that kills the guy. What I think happens is that the bot is next to a red barrel that blows up when the robot explodes and the red barrel kills the guy. What I ended up doing was running up to the barrel, tossing it as far as I could (it ended up in the waterlogged part of the level), knocking out as many dudes as I could reach, tossing the grenade, and then physically grabbing the guy who is invariably passed out directly underneath that damn robot and pulling him backward, and he came out alive. If I did not need to do that, that sucks yo.

I keep forgetting we have spoiler tags. But yeah, that’s what I was talking about Brian.

For some reason, it’s really hard to get headshots to qualify for the marksman bonus when using a scope. The Sniper rifle is superior if only because you can aim a lot faster with a laser sight and can disregard the scope.

It also kicked ass for a certain fight…

For the Malik helicopter fight, I one-shotted everyone quickly from the starting position except for two heavies, which I jumped down and eliminated with a double takedown. Then I EMP grenaded the robot just after it unpacked.

I lugged that silenced sniper rifle all over the game and wish I hadn’t. It was never a one shot kill and when I did shoot it would alarm everyone. Pretty awful in retrospect to what was suppose to be a stealthy murder dude.

I dunno, I’ve used the regular non-silenced sniper rifle a bunch as a ghost, and been able to pull it off fine. Alarmed (yellow) is no problem – hostile (red) is what you have to avoid, and if you’re sniping from an upper floor across the room, you can get back into cover fast enough usually. Then of course you have to relocate while they search where they heard the shot, but that’s Ghost 101 stuff…

And yes, a single headshot has to be fatal to do this, so the regular sniper is probably better. (Or were you not headshotting with the silenced sniper?)

Also, I went over to tranq rifle more, because it is more challenging and gives more XP. It’s fun to tranq someone, then tranq their buddy as their buddy revives them, then tranq them again as they stagger around about to revive their buddy.

However, when I do find a sniper rifle I generally snipe everyone with it right there, because it’s entertaining to be all shooty but still hidden and have everyone be all OMG WTF WAAAA. Then I drop the sniper rifle again, pick up whatever I had, and go on my merry way.

I couldn’t resist getting full inventory augs just because why NOT have a fucking heavy rifle on hand for moments like the one I’m about to play in my next savegame?

Upgraded energy cells + dermal armor + reflex aug = plenty of fun wading into a mob of bad guys and just punching the shit out of all of them while they frantically try (and fail) to blow my head off. Sometimes stealth is just too much fucking trouble.

Upgraded energy cells + dermal armor + typhoon = Splosion Man, Deus Ex edition.

Now I’m just waiting for super-extended sprinting and lowered recoil. Also upgraded inventory to max and I’m rocking a heavy rifle, tranq rifle, massively upgraded combat rifle, and even more massively upgraded 10mm pistol. DO NOT FUCK WITH ME as I have more ways to take you out than you will ever understand. And even with all that I mostly go for non-lethal takedowns because they are the most awesome.

I really, really, really fucking love this game. Skyrim and Arkham City have their work cut out for them to beat this for GoTY. This has already beaten Portal 2 on my personal list, and that’s saying something. But I’ve always been a cyberpunk nerd, so this is aimed straight at my geek weak spot.

Yeap, I’m with you. The more I play the more I realize how awesome a job they’ve done at capturing the best parts of DX1.

What bothers me most of the time is that some level geometry doesn’t let the AI shoot even when they have a clear line of sight. It’s weird that out of all the things that people were bitching about in terms of 3rd person breaking immersion, it’s the easily-exploited AI that reminds me I’m playing a game.

Ugh, thanks for making the silenced sniper completely useless (and non-upgradeable) by Hengsha 2. Can’t even headshot someone that doesn’t have a helmet on. Stupid stupid stupid. That basically means this thing is useless.

Has anyone used a regular (non-silenceable) sniper rifle with a damage upgrade, and does it give an instant kill at that point in the game?

3 posts up, Pogo!

I still don’t understand the point of the silenced sniper rifle. You can totally snipe people with the regular sniper rifle and then skedaddle; they can’t find you instantly if you’re sniping from across the map, and you can keep your Ghost bonus.

In fact last night I sniped some dude from one end of a balcony with a stair at the other end, and then two guys came up the stair to check, and since they had to run down the whole length of the balcony I was able to sneak up behind them as they were running and take them down (non-lethally, natch) one after the other. Then two MORE guys came and I took them down the same way as they were checking on their napping buddies. And then a FIFTH guy! Finally there was a pile of five unconscious dudes there, all because I used the NON-silenced sniper rifle. (Not to mention the original fellow I’d headshotted.)

So FUCK the silenced sniper rifle in the EAR. And yes, I believe this does serve as evidence that a regular non-damage-upgraded sniper rifle can still one-shot headshot by that point in the game. Not sure about helmeted dudes, though the silenced, armor-piercing 10mm does an excellent job headshotting them – if they’re facing the other way you can double-tap them and take them down before they can alert.

Also, I found this extremely amusing bookshelf:

let’s see if I can put a big fat fucking image in here

That is so full of win. “The Planet of Cakes”?!?!?! AWESOME.

Still my GoTY thus far.
