I’ve been thinking about upgrading, but I really need to know if it is worth it, and if it makes the game that much harder. I’m playing on Hell right now for the first time ever, and I don’t really think I need it to be any harder. Met a Superunique who was immune to magic AND immune to physical. Now that’s sweet, a monster that can’t be hurt. Maybe he should take on Diablo and the gang and establish himself as ruler of Hell.
My lvl 62 Sorceress just started on Act 3 and she is doing very well at the moment, the biggest problem being keeping my merc alive. Mostly I’ve played LAN with a Necro who provides plenty of meatshields for me, which makes my life easier. Hardest fight so far has been against the Anceints in nightmare. I shudder at the thought of meeting them in Hell. And the 1.10 patch is said to make them even harder.
So, should I upgrade? I don’t think I’ll ever bother with ladder play or BNet but solo or as a LAN game Diablo 2 is still hard to beat.
You will not be able to get anywhere with your sorceress if you upgrade. 1.10 is very hard if you don’t have extremely good equipment or have a good party to play with.
Just a warning to anyone whose eyes light up at the sight of the 2nd 1.10 beta: The patch will delete most of your items! If you are playing a converted 1.09 -> 1.10 character, you can recover your old items by reverting back to 1.09 before installing the new 1.10 beta. New characters created with the initial 1.10 patch are out of luck.
As to the topic question: I found that the 1.10 patch is definitely much harder than 1.09, but still just as fun. You’ll learn to cope with the increased difficulty. :D
I forgot one thing: start with a new character. You’ll likely find more useful items to cope with the increased difficulty, and you can use the synergy bonuses more effectively.
Ok as for the second beta 1.10 patch, don’t use it for now. It deletes most of your items, even legit ones, thanks to a “bug in previous 1.10 version”. The patch is supposed to get rid of duped & hacked items, but deletes most of any magic items
Wow, is that a bug? Or are you meant to just run away from him?[/quote]
Like Andrew Myers said, “magic” damage is only one kind of magic damage. The monster should still be damaged by other kinds of magic damage, such as fire.
The hardest time I ever had in the game, besides trying to beat Baal on Hell level (never did), was fighting a bunch of ghosts in a dungeon. I think it was Hell level and they were immune to physical damage. I could kill one, but it took long enough that I was swarmed by the others and they’d kill me. There wasn’t much room to run around so I couldn’t avoid them.
Oh, and there was some mob in the city of Tramiel I never beat either. I think he was immune to physical, plus he healed himself periodically. I eventually lured him into a room and ported out of it, and he stayed there when I came back so I could fight the end-level boss and finish Act III.
Man, I think I’m going to have to reload the game and get the patch and start a new character.
Looks like I won’t be upgrading anytime soon. I really don’t have the patience to make a new 1.10 character and take him/her through Hell. I’ll also add that the hardest fight I’ve had is no longer the ancients. Immediately upon entering the first level of the Flayer Dungeon I was swamped by two superuniques with minions. I think I died 8 times before I managed to thin out the pack enough. Once the flayers were reduced below critical mass mopping them up was easy, but geting to that point was not. In retrospect I could probably have exited and restarted the game and hoped for better spawning positions.
Trying to play a solo sorceress through hell in 1.10s is probably impossible for most players. Monsters have around three times as much hp, have higher resistances and inflict more damage as well. Synergies are necessary to do a lot of damage for a sorc, but this will mean that you only get one good elemental damage skill. Since every monster have some immunity it will mean that you will have to run away from a lot monsters. The only resistance that was lowered in general was physical and there are a lot less physical immune monsters, but this will probably just make it harder for a sorceress.
I think that “magic” damage means damage which is purely magical and not elemental such as the damage from bone spirit and bone spear. Physical + Magic immune monsters are still very hard to kill though.
