1. Basically never, except perhaps at the very beginning of the game when you have almost no skills.

  2. You can’t “switch classes mid game” per se, but once you’ve completed it with one class, you unlock adventure mode, which does basically the same thing (as well as opening up other gameplay modes).

Note that your weapon still ‘powers’ all of your skills and your paper doll DPS is derived from that of your weapon base. Higher DPS weapon is better.

I don’t think I can do 30 on my wizard; no 3rd gem and low +elite damage (just from the Unity ring.) Looking at the leader boards everyone seems to be using either a Sunkeeper or a Forge - no Serpent Sparkler. :( I did start playing my monk extensively last week and I finally got the Sunwuko (SWK) set for my monk. I also got enough pieces for the 6 pc Raiment set, but that uses dashing strike and I didn’t like that at all. The SWK set spawns an ally that taunts and does 3500% weapon damage for every 75 spirit spent, which effectively means spamming a mantra repeatedly. Paired with a Flying Dragon staff (chance to double attack speed) my monk can clear a T6 rift in about 10-15 minutes (assuming I don’t get two many asshole mobs with horrible affixes. I’m looking at you waller frost/arcane Mallet lords.) In addition to SWK, using Aughild’s and Blackthornes (+elite damage, elite damage reduction) I think he can break 30. I’m going to try this week sometime. Looking at the rankings, the bottom of the DH boards are equivalent to the top of the monk boards :D Don’t know if I can do 34+, probably not as player skill does count for something in those higher rifts.

Just dropping in to say that, while work has prevented me from playing actively lately, I would still like to be in the clan as I anticipate some more free time in the coming weeks to start playing again. That is all.

As others have noted, your weapon is basically a stats platform, and has nearly zero impact on anything else. The exception is bows, because some abilities require, well, a bow, but in general wizards can tote around wands, staves, swords, daggers, axes, clubs, or linguini and it won’t matter much.

I’ve heard this quite a bit from new players, even more so recently, having picked up the console version to play same-screen co-op with friends. I think it’s interesting that this was never a disconnect for me, where I abstracted the weapon as part of the character animation despite it not being physically represented.

Thanks guys!

Playing as a wizard for the first time, in the first two I played melee characters and an Amazon once.

I tried to get my wife to play this and the noped out when she saw the big fat dudes blow up and snakes come out of them. That was too much for her (she’s a bit squeamish when it come to that kind of stuff). The witchy woman vomiting out zombies was another good one.

I’m assuming there are more crazy, gross enemies later on. The torsos that wiggle at you from behind bushes are fun.

Wish you were on PC. Would be fun to have you in our group!

Some random observations/replies -

I was less than 10 seconds late killing the grift37 guardian last night. The depressing part, even that fairly impressive feat wouldn’t put me on the top1000 class leaderboards. At this point the only significant DPS increase I could get would be a Bombadiers Rucksack (quiver) that is better rolled. I could get +15% sentry damage, another 70 dex, and 3% more AS on mine. I suppose that if I rolled an absolutely perfect +20% cold damage bow that could also potentially be an upgrade, but I have what is essentially a perfect Windforce (2950ish dps, gg), which compliments Strongarm Bracers very nicely. The only real “upgrade” I’d get out of that is being able to dump Evasive Fire for Tumble. Evasive Fire does some marginal amount of dps, but more importantly proc’s knockbacks for Strongarms and generates huge amounts of hatred (7 per shot, and my AS is pretty high), to use for spamming Maelstrom, which does more than marginal dps, and heals you. Still, tumble would probably save me a death and 20-30 seconds of running time per rift. It’s a toss up really. Sometimes the damage will be better, sometimes the speed and survivability.

As to whoever said that defensive stats are worthless because you will always get one shotted, this is absolutely not true. My DH does not get 1 shotted on Grift 37. You just need at least 26m toughness (counting Unity on you and your follower, an effective doubling of your toughness, which is required for Rifts that high). A small amount of attacks will 1-shot him still, an Elite act 1 Charger’s charge, or the Rift Guardian modeled after Rakanoth… his little teleport attack. But I imagine with 30m toughness I’d survive those, and that’s not a really difficult number to achieve with Unity. I could hit it now moving paragon points into VIT, but I am more often bottlenecked by killing speed than by dying. And I mean, if you are getting hit by rhino charges you kind of had it coming. I do walk into the old “fml” situation sometimes, usually when entering a new rift floor. You will sometimes spawn with 2 or even 3 bosses/elites within attack range. I can still beat them without losing a ton of time, but I will die 3-5 times. Fortunately because of that huge concentration of bosses the amount of rift closure you get basically makes the whole thing a frustrating wash, time-wise.

Barbs/Monks/Crusaders all have much better healing tools and take 30% less damage from all attacks, so I’m quite certain if a DH can avoid being 1 shot on 37, anyone else can on 32. Getting 2 Unity rings can be a pain, based on the RNG. And no, you won’t be able to wear your Stone of Jordan on Grift 32+ unless your build somehow doesn’t require RoRG to function.

The Grift chart feels about right, as I think the difficulty increase curve does slow down a bit on the higher end (notice the difference between early difficulty changes is 2 rift levels, the final one on the list is 4 levels). Every 4 or 5 rift levels feels like a Torment level to me in the higher Grifts. 39 is the highest I’ve ever beaten, and only because I got very lucky during a trial and got a 39 stone out of it. And no, I didn’t beat it in close to the timer. Hah. Still, that 39 Grift made T6 literally feel like normal difficulty next to t6 in comparison. It was utterly discouraging.

And lastly, I also wish Ramaldani’s Gift could be used on Jewelry at least. I have 3 of the things sitting in my stash, and they don’t stack :P First world problems, I know.

Dont run solo rifts so not using unity+follower on my DH.

Thus => oneshotted.

I see. In a group situation I’d certainly take Awareness, and possibly Perfectionist. In a group you should be getting some pretty substantial buffs like the Barb Roar and Monk/Templar resist auras, at least on the higher Grifts where instant death is an issue. Unless you are running all Wizard/DH/WD groups, which while having great DPS don’t have much survivability. Also, in a group I’d probably wear a Countess Julia’s Cameo, as it makes you immune to both Jailor damage and Arcane Beams, two out off three of the instant death attacks (direct Mortar hits being the third on higher Grifts). As a final option, I’m assuming you have Marauder 6 as it’s pretty much required for grift 30+, you can easily stay outside of Jailor range by dropping your sentrys from their own max range. I still think not dying is pretty crucial to making it through a rift on time in a group, as your dps contribution while dead is 0. Still, it’s obviously more important solo.

Speaking of which, finally beat grift37, that damn white whale. On to 38, but I fear I’ll need that perfectly rolled quiver or else 100 paragon levels to it.

Word is that you can use Ramaladni’s Gift on jewelry on PTR, so it’s probably coming soon.

If that’s true the whole game just went easy-mode and beating grift 40 will become easy.

That would be awesome. The 2.1.1 patch is going live tomorrow I wonder if that will be included?

I love Awareness on my DH. The change to it in 2.1 made it a must have passive IMO. I basically play a little reckless and then if it pops I just have a minute or so where I have to play conservatively and retreat a lot.

If you ever FIND the freaking things, anyway. I can’t seem to get a Gift to drop. Then again, I’m totally sucked into Wasteland 2 at the moment.

Wow I just had two Thunderfuries drop within the span of 20 minutes. The last time I got a TF was sometime last year.

It’s the magic of the RNG. I got zero for like 2-3 weeks of frequent playing, and then 5 in three days. They’re probably as rare as the unique potions, or maybe very slightly more rare, as I’ve gotten probably about about 5 unique potions over the same time frame I got 5 Ramaldani’s.

Hah. I’d forgotten unique potions even existed. Never seen one.

I saw an awesome picture of a description of one once!

Heh, after gambling over 50,000 blood shards for them, I finally got my Tasker and Theo gloves. Not great stats on them, but they’re making a big difference for my pet doctor.

I checked on diablofans, and it looks as if the upcoming patch is going to include new treasure goblin types/behaviors.
