That’s true, and I would honestly prefer aesthetic or utility type shop items. Let me unlock more character slots, tabs, alternative spell animations, character skins, silly transmogs, etc.

I disagree (in theory anyway) that speeding up drop rates makes the game more rewarding. A good long grind just makes your sweet loots more satisfying, assuming the loot tables are tuned correctly so that good stuff drops often enough.

Also the more flexibility with that drop the better. If your rare item can be converted into EXACTLY what you want it’s OK for them to show up less frequently, a la Monster Hunter where the rare part can be used in a variety of weapon types or armors. In a game like Destiny where what you get is what you get I think the drop rate for top tier stuff needs to be a bit faster since you can’t form it to what you want and it’s basically just a slot machine at that point.

I haven’t played enough Diablo to know where it falls on the loot spectrum, but I am hoping it is a well designed table.

Play limit timers are all the rage in mobile. Let’s hope that’s what Platinum buys you out of.

At the elder game, Diablo is all about the grind. Reduce the grind by X% and the game is X% more rewarding. Full stop.

@Joe: Yes, I like the Path of Exile monetization strategy. Cosmetic items/effects, non-combat pets, character slots, and stash slots.

I’m also OK paying for content. New maps, storylines, and events are all great.

I’d pay $5 to make my zombie dogs look like cool, creepy statues like in Path of Exile.

From my perspective, there is a huge difference between how the base game is monetized and how expansions/new content are supported.

I feel like the base game of Diablo III was complete (I mean, I love it 100x more with Legs and all) and well worth my money and I loved the expansion. I am more than happy to drop another $40 on another expansion. But I am also fine with a more a la carte system. It is one of those things (like fun) that are hard to draw a line on, but for me I am more than happy to pay for DLC/expansions/tack-on-items if I want them but not if I feel like I should have got them at a base game level. Does that make any sense?

I ran into one of those recent patch treasure gnomes last night. You know, the kind that take you to…a special place. I had not touched the game in awhile and had played it a boat load across multiple interest windows. It’s nice to see such legs and content pop up to add random fresh moments years into a life cycle.

I’d love to see something like:

$10 - Necromancer
$10 - Druid
$10 - Assassin

That’d be well worth it to me if they could bring the old classes back in the new game, overlap be damned!

I just read the upcoming patch makes Time Stop a ranged attack - this is amazing. I stopped using it because I felt like it was kinda tricky to pull of when it centers on you, so this is really interesting. I rolled up a Season 2 wizard last weekend and hit level 15 or so and was having a blast all over again - I’ve gotten more out of Diablo III than any game in the last 5 years I realized, counting up my hours and adding them together by class I’m over 300 hours invested in Diablo III and have barely scratched the “late game” content (though I do have four level 70 characters)!

I am still only Paragon 30 or so for SC and HC. Got pulled through T6 by a Paragon 400+ a couple of nights ago. Boy oh boy was I under-geared! He was playing solo in 4p with his DH and basically melting stuff at good clip. I was following around vacuuming up drops, while being careful to avoid elites and otherwise try not to get one-shotted by the more dangerous whites.

Picked up a handful of legs and a set item in one bounty run and a rift - about 40 minutes of gameplay. Oh and 10 paragon levels!

Season 2 is coming to end in a couple weeks; Season 3 looks pretty good with new and/or updated sets. Wizards finally will have builds other than Firebirds - I’m so hoping I can at last have an ice mage I’ve wanted since the game came out. Of course this morning after maybe 50 or more tries I finally crafted an ancient devastor (+fire damage mace) and scored an ancient firebird source from Kadela. (Also got my first Wand of Woh -which I probably won’t ever use. I think now I’ve gotten every weapon in the game except for a Star Metal Kukri :( 2 million sheet DPS buffed, first character to get that high. But, with the season 2 monk Sunwuko set, still think my lightning bell monk is better. I’ve only tried grift 34 with the monk, but that wasn’t too much trouble. Folks on the test server are doing level 50 greater rifts with every class. Don’t think I’ll ever be trying those.

I got the King Leoric Crown yesterday from someone who was called QT3 and i gave him my Firebird Shoulder (got 3 of those already). Thanks man! :D

Wow, after season 1 going so long I figured I had weeks and weeks to play my s2 character(s). Guess…not :)

On sale, 50% off, and still $19.99? Wow! Suckered my stupid ass in, and after a few hours I’m seriously pissed. I could have bought at least FOUR GREAT games for $20! Instead, I got this. Diablo 2 with slightly better graphics. Amazing! Blizzard will never, ever get another dime from me. And, don’t get me started on how ridiculously difficult it was to buy D3 for my (16 yr-old) daughter (Holy Cow!). Hint: You must lie!

Now probably isn’t the time to inform you of the free starter edition, is it? Or that the game is rated M, so it should be hard for a 16 year old to buy? I dunno, this just seems like a really weird rant for a game that’s approaching 3 years old with a ton of info available about it. In any event, sorry that it wasn’t for you.

I assumed he was being sarcastic, but hey, this is the internet, so who knows.

It seemed like a genuine angry rant to me. I didn’t agree with any part of it, but it doesn’t bother me when people have tastes completely opposite to mine.

Yeah, apologies to D3-lovers for the over-the-top rant. I can’t say I didn’t mean it, but re-reading, it was a bit much. Dialing it back a notch or two, I’m disappointed, but must admit that D3 is my most regretted purchase of the last year or two. Also, I understand the “M” rating, it just seems odd that “gifting” is not allowed, and the assumption that no one under 18 is playing is just plain silly (IMO). Many a great D2 family gaming sessions were enjoyed over the years with all 3 of my daughters, so I’d hoped to continue the tradition with D3. It might still happen if/when I get over my initial curmudgeonly irritation. :)

That isn’t even a blip on the rant radar.

I still think people who enjoy Alpha Protocol in any way whatsoever are worse than Hitler.

I think you will find D3 grows on you. I rarely re-play games once I “finish” them, but I keep coming back to this. I bought the base game on a 50% sale about 6 mos ago and picked up the expansion during the current sale, since I’d had so much fun with the base game. I share your frustration with the lack of “gifting”, however.
