So I’m clear to woodchipper any uniques have no orange property, right? Looting them gives me the transmog if any, then I can Cube out their orange property?
That’s how I understand it, at least.

Unless you really like the unique and want to re-roll it with (hopefully) better stats.

My friend and I hit 70 yesterday afternoon. I’m playing a tanky monk using Cyclone Strike to pull everything in. He has a DPS monk build and currently has a legendary power slotted that reduces the cooldown of 7 Sided Strike by 60%, a legendary weapon that causes 7 Sided Strike to strike an additional 7 times, and legendary bracers that apply Exploding Palm when Exploding Palm explodes. It is freaking ridiculous. We upped the difficulty from Master to Torment 2 and were still blowing through everything. I think he slotted 7 Sided Strike with the Sustained Attack rune which brought the cooldown to just over 6 seconds. I’m actually kind of jealous…
Okay, that’s what I thought. Good deal.
Disintegrate remains quite strong; I am pleased. This build is surprisingly tanky, too.
This Disintegrate build is like being Diablo from D2 and just lightning hosing everything forever. I am amused.

I got that legendary bracer with the EP ability at lvl 20ish and I am now 65 and still can’t replace it. The chain exploding palms going off is such a glorious sight to see. Running with a lvl 23ish piece of gear as a 65 in hardcore is risky, but what’s the worst that can happen?

I’m currently speed-farming Torment II with my seasonal monk with a spirit generator build with two pieces of Raiment of Thousand Storms (+300% damage, +25% attack speed), Depth Diggers (+95% damage), Alacrity passive (+15% attack speed), Seize the Initiative passive (+30% attack speed), Dashing Strike with Radiance rune (+15% attack speed) and Way of the Hundred Fists with Blazing Fists rune (+15% attack speed), Mystic Ally with Fire Ally rune (+10% damage) and Exploding Palm with the Flesh is Weak rune (+20% damage).
I have Gungdo Gear (Exploding Palm spreads) and Scourge (45% chance when attacking to explode with demonic fury for 1800-2000% weapon damage as Fire) slotted via the Canai Cube.
Even though I’m using a two-hander (Maximus, for the +20% fire damage) my attack speed is still completely ridiculous (which procs Scource every couple of seconds). Elite packs melt in seconds and I could probably do Torment 4-6 damage-wise, but my survivability is not nearly there yet.

Sadly my favorite abilities are frost arrow and frost orb, and I don’t have the gear to support either one yet… still working on that. Also neither is an endgame build, unfortunately, so even when properly geared I won’t compete with what I’ve got going now.
So as someone who liked D2 but never touched D3 due to all the negative word of mouth at launch, is this worth trying now? I see I can get the base game for 19.99 which seems reasonable for someone like me who will probably only ever play single player until I beat the base campaign once. I generally don’t have the patience to get really into online play or optimizing max-level characters.
There is no offlline play on the PC version, really. It’s all online. I rarely play with anyone else, but occasionally guild members drop into my games. You would need the expansion though because, well, it really fleshes the game out and makes it complete, along with all the patches (assuming PC version here). Whether you play by yourself or with others doesn’t really matter in this case.
And yes, the game is very much worth trying. Blizzard has pretty much removed everything that was an obstacle to just leveling, killing, looting, and reveling in action-y badassery.
Frozen Orb will live on in my heart forever. Sadly I have no idea what crazy things you’d have to do to make it actually viable in D3.
Hmmm, if the base game isn’t all that great maybe I’ll pass. $20 for the base game is reasonable to try it out, but $20 for the base game and $40 for the expansion is a bit rich for me for a game I’m not sure about.
I have over 1000 hours in D3 and no end in sight. On a pure dollar for time played it’s certainly top 3 of all time for me. I know that doesn’t mean much as you may find it totally different, but thought I’d relay that info.
I’m someone that doesn’t really get obsessed with games any longer. The fact that I’ve gotten this much play time out of something is actually pretty surprising.
I can’t imagine anyone not getting at least 200 hours out of this game unless you just flat out hated it. There really is no reason to dislike the game, it’s fantastic. It’s really well done, very polished, and fun to play. /shrug.
I’d rank D3 as one of the safest bets possible to recommend to someone.
Now that my commercial for D3 is done, I’ve just got my Barb set up with Julios (24% arcane damage heals you instead), ice climbers, and summon fire demon (name escapes me, weapon skill). Fun stuff, a ton of other combos I’m looking forward to trying once I farm the mats up.
I still can’t believe that Bizz has dumped this much work into this game for free.

That’s kind of a weird statement. I don’t want to fill the thread with negative D3 posts, but I find the game pretty boring. After reading about people’s excitement with the new patch I fired it up again and played a rift and a bounty. I can understand how people like the character building / equipping. but the actual combat is pretty dull to me. I’ll leave it at that, but I wanted to respond to the ‘there’s no reason to dislike it’. There are definitely people who just find this type of game enjoyable so it’s not an automatic hit.
I don’t think he was presenting that as a statement so much as just his opinion. As with any opinion you read on the internet, take it with a weighty grain of salt, ymmv, and etc… :)
I find the best measure for “will I enjoy this game?” is just to watch people play it, generally speaking. I can sometimes bounce off a game and then later find it’s one of my most enjoyable experiences after I watch someone play and get an idea of how to approach it. Going back to stuff like Master of Magic, Final Fantasy Tactics, and Dungeon Keeper even, all games I didn’t like when I played it, but after watching someone else play and enjoy them, I turned around real quick. So if someone wants to know if Diablo III is going to be worth $60 for them, I’d definitely recommend watching some gameplay. Hopefully not super high end, someone who’s been playing for thousands of hours gameplay though, pick someone doing a Let’s Play and playing for the first time themselves, generally speaking.
Also, if there’s a QT3 clan, I’d join. Was in a zombie clan for a board I don’t post on any more.

I see your point for sure. The loot system is great, and optimizing builds and equipment. I find that more interesting than the combat mechanic itself, which is mainly “find a few spells/abilities that work well, and hit those interchangeably over and over”.
