I want to say you can choose which platforms to include in your leaderboard.
Very positive review by Owen Good. He especially loves the randomized courses that can be created, which apparently get integrated into the campaign too?
If Dirt 4 fails at anything, it was only in selling me on the importance and value of that creation tool in the first place. Yeah, yeah, “creation” mode, OK, I’m busy with the career now. I’ll get to that later.
No. You need to see this.
It’s in the events menu, under freeplay, in the rally or historic rally disciplines. (Two other racing series are available with customizable options but they race fixed courses.) Just two sliders, for length and complexity, are used to generate the course from five environments. That’s it. I could build a three-stage event in two minutes. It then became a full partner event in my career, with all the sponsorship bonuses and the like.
The bolded part was my thoughts when I started the game. Of course, now that I can’t play career mode, but can play other parts of the game, I should look into this course creation thing, and what can be done with it outside of career mode.
I think I narrowed down my crashes.
I suspected this might be it. The career map that Dirt 4 always crashes on is an event during the rain. So as soon as it loads up, it crashes my PC. So far I’ve been okay on the daily and weekly events.
Today the daily event is a rain event. So I got to test out my theory: Would it crash in a rain event even during a daily event, which has never given me a problem before?
As soon as the level loaded, bam. Hard crash. I had to reboot my PC.
So I think I’ve found the culprit. Now I just have to always avoid the rain in DiRT 4.
There’s another event today in which its snowing. I guess I get to test out if it’s all moisture that destroys my PC, or just rain.
Just put an umbrella over your PC.
Seriously, though, that is weird. You must be using some crazy offbrand videocard with beta drivers.
-Tom
Heh. No, still same AMD equivalent of 7950HD, I forgot the new name of that card. 280? Something like that. eVGA, latest drivers, no beta drivers.
One difference is that unlike DiRT Rally, DiRT 4 doesn’t start off by showing me the AMD logo. It must expect me to have an nvidia card this time around.
I tested out snow. It works fine!
I went under “Freeride” and created a long australian championship with four long stages of increasing complexity. And it treats it just like a career event! So in essence, I can create my own tracks and do career mode via getting sponsors and upgrade my facility and team, etc. All that stuff is fine, as long as I don’t create any tracks with rain, I should be able to get through the game without going into the career menu where I’m forced to do rain events.
Cool cool cool.
I’ll just be doing randomly generated tracks though. I won’t be able to compare my time with my friends list.
Do you have AMD ReLive installed? The program that lets you record gameplay to a HD?
With the current drivers Dirt 4 hated if I had ReLive’s replay setting on - it would crash in inclement weather and get really jerky in normal weather. However, if I turned replay off the game ran fine, even if I was actually recording live. So it was something specific to the replay function.
I had noticed some issues with alt-tabbing taking forever, so I actually updated to the AMD beta drivers and… hey presto… all the problems went away. I can now record or use replay in Dirt 4 without issue.
I don’t have ReLive installed. But I’ll give the beta drivers a go, if they worked for you.
Edit: Nope, didn’t help. I don’t think it’s the video drivers. Usually if it’s video related it doesn’t crash the whole machine requiring hard reboot.
Is anything overclocked on your PC? Try reducing this to see if it stops the crashing.
(One Hard Reboot later)…
Nope. Nothing overclocked. But I did just try underclocking the video card, but that didn’t help either.
Looking on the bright side though, at least I can play the game just fine. I don’t need no stinking rainy tracks!
That sucks that you’re having so many problems @Rock8man. I can’t remember if up thread you said you tried the various options for borderless window, fullscreen, regular window. Sometimes one behaves better than the others. Crappy generic suggestion - I know.
Great suggestion actually! I hadn’t tried windowed. I just did. It still crashed, but it didn’t take the whole system down with it. I got a message from Radeon saying default settings had been restored due to a system crash. And then I was able to shut down the non-responsive DiRT 4 window by clicking the upper right X button. That’s way better than hard reboots!
Some people are saying that turning off mirrors in the advanced graphics section fixes their rain crash issue.
Wow that worked! Holy shit. I’d kiss you if you were in the room right now rob.
It’s funny that it never occurred to me that it might be a relatively widespread problem. I’m so used to PC gaming problems being machine specific so often.
Rainy days are here to stay! Patch notes:
R9 graphics cards crash when competing in rainy conditions is now resolved.
Today’s daily is a wet weather run on the tarmac in Spain. I was going well until clipping a barrier about 3/4 of the way through which punctured the right front tyre and, given the conditions, rendered the car almost undriveable.
Fine, I thought, I’ll just change the tyre and finish the stage. I push the button mapped to roadside repairs only to discover that the button mapped to ‘select’ is on the G27’s manual shifter (which I don’t have setup since I have a curved desk). Okay, let’s try mapping it to another button - oh, those bindings are greyed out for no apparent reason (lots of other ones can be changed).
Rage quit in frustration. :(
So I haven’t played any of the Dirt games but it sounds like I want this for the PS4. Quick couple of questions. Do I want this, or Dirt Rally? Sounds like this. Also, recommendations for a PS4 wheel?
