DiRT Rally - Codemasters' early access PC rally game

It does. I don’t know why I don’t care about Steam achievements. Or Steamies, as @Jason_McMaster calls them. It’s a mystery for the ages.

Picked this up in the humble monthly. Been a long time since I really put any time into a racing game, and I wasn’t sure I really wanted to anymore, so I hadn’t gotten this yet.

After trying the opening rally in Greece, mall I can say is WOW. I’d seen my son play a bit, but didn’t really appreciate how technical the stages were until I tried it myself. Racers tend to be tough n my hands, so I’m not sure how much I will play, but I’m really impressed.

It really is a great game. One thing I’d say for new players is to hang in there if you start the career game and you find the feel lacking. Some people just don’t get on with the short wheelbase/front wheel drive combination of the Mini.

If this happens to you I’d avoid rushing up to the 1970s cars which can be twitchy, (especially the Escort and the mid-engine Stratos), and go for the RWD Renault Alpine. It has a great combination of length and just enough power to be dangerous, but still controllable.

Also, don’t sleep on the Rallycross.

No, I think the feel is great, but the thing people may not understand is how light the mini is. Really tempted to get my wheel out of the box.

Do any of you use a wheel? Do you prefer clutch or not? Soft lock or not?

Wheel - G27
No clutch. Mainly because I’m lazy, but also because I’ve mapped my clutch pedal as the handbrake!
No soft lock. I just fix the max rotation to about 400 degrees in the Logitech software. I’m sure it’s more realistic to use the game’s soft lock but I never got used to it when jumping between cars…

I did a thing.

Then I did it better.

Although, sticking the landing may actually give the nod to the first one.

And that’s why I could never beat Mr_Bismarck in the QT3 league !

No, no…the second is a double corkscrew right at the camera. Winner for sure!

Sad Trombone.

I love that so much. Perfect.

Is there any rule of thumb about whether front or rear wheel drive is better suited to certain conditions or courses?

RWD is better when you want to go sideways.

Which, obviously, should be in all conditions and on all courses… ☺️

All-wheel drive is the best all around—given equal skill, AWD beats the other two handily. RWD is most competitive on tarmac. FWD is easier to handle on loose surfaces.

Which isn’t to say I don’t enjoy a good stage in the RWD Lancias.

I’d say Fishbreath is correct, assuming equal driver talent and equal setup.

ledShok you can most certainly get a FWD car very loose. It will just be loose in very different ways than a RWD car. DiRT rally and other sims model it well.

A few general tips

  • stiffen the rear suspension: the ARB, the shocks, and the springs
  • add camber to the front
  • reduce camber in the rear
  • add air pressure to the rear

All of these things will reduce rear traction. The rear will gimbal around while the fronts point to where you want to go.

Works in sims, and in real life. The difference is the RWD car will get loose from apex to corner exit…the FWD car will get loose from turn-in to apex.

Nice description. Personally, I much prefer fwd to rwd for this reason.

Both are fun because motorsports are fun!

I’ve driven both FWD/RWD in many sims. I just recently switch from autocrossing and tracking a MINI to a Miata. I am currently a better FWD driver, but working on my RWD skills.

Played this on the Vive the other night. Wasn’t too difficult to get running using Revive. Never having played a rally game and not being a huge racing fan it’s going to take some getting used to. Was too busy trying to stay on the road to understand what the co-driver was saying. Looked pretty good visually and I had zero discomfort. Made friends with a few trees. Pretty neat experience. Going to have to put some more time in on it this weekend.

Like I told you, don’t worry about going too fast to start. Get a hang of the codriver calls and you will learn when you can start to push it.

How is the Vive version…?
